Default V70 Dashboard bulb replacement

Hi everyone,

I need to replace the abs light bulb on the dashboard - as it involves taking the dashboard apart to get at the bulbs I thought I'd replace them all just to be on the safe side. My questions is.......where can I buy replacement bulbs from apart from the main dealer? I've looked on ebay and halfords to no avail......

Thanks

(1998 V70 2.4 10 valve petrol)

No need to take the dash out (and even that's not a hard job) - I believe you can take the lower dash panel off and replace bulbs by putting your hand up behind the dash.

I've not done it (yet) but others on here who have will confirm this.

Yes you can reach the bulbs from behind the dash once the lower panel has been removed, you will need a Torx size 20 driver to release the single screw securing the panel.

The job is fiddly when carried out this way, if the car has no passenger side dash mounted airbag I would pull the dash top off as that only takes 20 minutes and makes access so much easier as you can see what you are doing, the dash top is only secured with Torx size 20 screws, most of them are hidden behind trim:

remove dashtop speaker grills for two screws.
two screws going through top of instrument pod
take out air feed pipes from end of dash (feed air into the door) screw both sides
Remove glove box internal case
Remove airvents outboard and center

Once all the screws are removed the dashtop will simply slide towards you, lift up to remove from the car.

If the car has the passenger side airbag you will need to disconnect the battery, leave the car for 20 minutes before disconnecting and removing the airbag from the dash - Mike

had top off dash today swapped all the bulbs ive stuck in 501 bulbs for illumination and after a bit of digging found that 286 bulbs fit the bill for the warning lights as per handbook these are 1.2w but 5mm diameter were as handbook spec is 1.2w at 6mm diameter but they work fine in mine did replace all of them as they only cost pence all replaced less than £2.50

A word of caution (learnt the hard way!).

If you do have a passenger side airbag, it can be disconnected behind the glove box so that you can lift the dash top off.

BUT...

Don't try testing the bulbs by switching on the ignition with the airbag disconnected. You'll end up with an SRS warning light that will need resetting. (I was lucky. I managed to find a helpful local VOC chap who reset it for me FOC.)
