It is common for dealers to replace the angle gear uneccesarily, unfortunatly, when the splined sleeve fails (just because it's easier?).

What was wrong with the angle gear?

Splined teeth? Do you mean the teeth on the angle gear? Or the splines that receive the splined collar? It is rare for that to happen but it is possible which is why I recommend replacing the sleeve at 55,000 before the splines break off and do any damage.

The teeth (splines) that take the collar

Guess you were unlucky. Most people seem to get away with driving around with broken splines.

I'm currently on FWD only on my Mar 2006 D5 185. Like others, only became obvious in the recent snow, although I had noticed loss of traction when leaving junctions in the wet.

Will probably get it fixed soon - was quoted around £480 at South Hants Volvo.

Bit irritating that the Volvo used warranty expired last October and I suspect it was probably gone by then, but unnoticed.

Sorry to hear of your predicament, but this is interesting, because this is the first 185 I have heard of with this problem - presume this is a 185 pre-faclift(indicators in mirrors) model - so the uprated sleeve must have been introduced with the facelift, not the engine/gearbox upgrade???

The new sleeve was fitted from July 2006. (Manufacture date, not registration date.)

They did mine i also got them to do the cambelt and fit 4 tyres at the same time. They did a good job and also in the time scale promised.
