Ghent being a good choice because a lot of the raw materials can be sourced from the local plants, like plasticisers for bumpers/screens being one... And having a massive seaport helps for export.

I've always found this link very interesting, and it suggests that the 850 was planned to be built exclusively in Ghent, but we know that didn't turn out to be the case!

I think a lot of people might see a large component marked "Made in Sweden" etc and assume incorrectly that's where the whole car was assembled. The surest way of knowing is to check the VIN.
I'm no expert, but a quick Google suggests that the country codes YA to YE mean it's made in Belgium and YS to YW mean it's made in Sweden, so mine being YV would suggest it was actually assembled in Sweden, and not Belgium as I had thought previously!

I was disappointed when I spotted mine. Probably the sea port in Belgium has factored into my corrosion.
I think Sweden playing a bigger role would have left more substantial results.
Cheers

Have a look at the bottom of things like the ashtray and other plastic mouldings; they give you a good idea as to how long the car sat around between build and registration in the UK.

I'd put it down to a couple of days tops, unless it was like my car which was built in Nov/December 1999, and was registered in the first few days in January 2000, so had the Christmas holidays and the extra value of being registered in 2000 compared to 1999.

The only thing I don't trust is the Dutch to do electrics... the Belgians and the Swedes were about level in terms of quality.

Mine mirrors your's Ed, albeit it 3 years earlier, many many parts manufactured December '96, the car was subsequently registered in the middle of January '97.
Cheers

Hi,
Well that's damn strange! My VIN starts YV (like yours) but ther's a plate under the bonnet that clearly says made in Belgium. Uhhh!

Weird! What's the plaque attached to? If it's the bodyshell then I'm as confused as you lot!
