How to add built-in satnav s60 2001?
What is the method for retro fitting the built in 2001 s60 sat nav? Is it as simple as buying a 2nd hand pop down sat nav unit off ebay, or is there a lot more to do than that?
Apparently some equipment on s60 is linked to the car and will not work in another, don't know if that includes the sat nav unit, but I guess it might do. Last edited by ALBERT10; Feb 16th, 2015 at 09:02. |

There's a lot of kit that needs to go in, the screen, a unit in the boot and a link in to the stereo head unit. Most of it is coded and I've only heard of it being done with brand new kit. It cost north of 800 quid!
I love the look off the pop up screen but that's way too rich for me!

A while ago, a chap fitted a standard Garmin nav unit to the lifting frame he bought from Ebay. He then rigged the motor (that lifts the nav up out of the dash) to live, via a basic radio unit with a small fob so he could lift and lower it manually.
Much better than the crap-nav volvo fitted to their cars back then.

Just don't expect it to cost you £85 and a couple screws and clips. It also needs a remote control adding to your shopping list. The whole idea is a lot of time trouble and expense to end up with a 15 year old sat nav when vastly superior alternatives are available for much less. It's a bit like building your own black and white analogue portable t.v.

Honestly, spend your money on a decent phone holder and wire in a charger. It will be a billlion times less crap.

I'm currently modifying an old Volvo screen to hold a Garmin sat nav. The Garmin is a reasonable fit without a lot of work. I've stripped out most of the contents of the Volvo screen, everything except the motor and mechanism for the screen to rise. At the moment I'm waiting for a couple of parts to automate the mechanism without having to try to talk to any Volvo electronics.
It isn't going to be fitted in a Volvo but it made sense to use a Volvo screen as so much of the mechanism is 'ready done'. I was originally going to make a lift from scratch, my initial research into sourcing components for runners etc was starting to look complicated, when I found that the Garmin sat nav had the same size screen and would fit well into the outer casing, to quote a well known phrase, 'it was a no brainer'. |

Satnav details
Hello
I am trying to fit a RTI pop up monitor from a S80 2005 to my S80 1999, I don't have any cabling. Into a Garmin GV 53, it look like you have done something similar, are you able to give me any advice on how to go about this - pretty please!! |

bit late to the party if you've already purchased parts, but for anyone else thinking about it - I would say just go with an aftermarket double din touchscreen unit
they connect to android or apple, so the map is always up to date, it sorts out the bluetooth music issue, it looks a million times better than than the standard early noughties CD player the only downside I can think of is you have to look further down to see the map, it's not high up on the dash. but 90% of the time you're listening to voice instructions anyway, or you can glance at it briefly. and you can speak to it to do stuff like "navigate to..." or "find nearest tesco.." etc or "play bohemian rhapsody" and so on I assume you can pull out all that pop-up hardware and just put a standard speaker cover piece in so it looks normal. I get the point out something being there and not working, to be fair that would annoy me unless you're really into the whole keeping it original thing, I dont really see much point labouring over aged tech. **personal opinion only and respect the fact that others will vary** Last edited by stuart bowes; Jun 24th, 2021 at 12:11. |
