That is a fuse holder. Possibly added by a previous owner for some aftermarket sound system or such.

It's also got crimped connectors, it's definitely been for an after market addition at some point.

The knot on the red, presumably live, wire is a nice touch. Probably intended to keep the live end inside the fuse holder with the fuse out.

What kind of fuse goes in there?
*maybe that's why flux capacitor doesn't work...
Don't know any sandwich guy...
I want to try to put a fuse in it and see what happens

Hi,, these are the ends of in line fuse holders. When I use to use these on car radios or fog/driving lights I would fit the glass fuses in them. This type of fuse was standard fit on BMC cars in the 70's.

Strange to see that the black and re wire are fitted for the hodler. Does the black wire go to earth somewhere?

I wouldn't until I had found the two ends of those wires and whatever it is they are or are not attached to. One of them could be lying, wires bare against something. Sod's Law.

Agree with Brendan - it looks to be quite heavy gauge wire so as it is an in line fuse you must assume the red goes directly back to the battery live - the key questions are where and through what the black eventually did or still does go to earth.
