Default Dead Engine

Hi all,

I'm back with another problem (when will it end?!?!)

Driving the car down the road when I hear a flapping noise coming from the wheels. Thought it was just a piece of paper stuck to a wheel because it was intermitent and as the wheel was rotating it was coming up and touching the arch.

Then the noise stopped after about 800 yards, and so did the engine. It just faded away and won't start again! Local specialist won't be open until Monday, so I may as well do something productive and try to get an idea of whats wrong.

I don't think it's the starter motor because the car was already running, the battery is full and has no problems, there is definately fuel in the tank. I was thinking there may be kink in the fuel line but first, I can't find one and second, when I try to turn the engine over it doesn't even crank which makes me think it's something else.

It makes a noise when I try to turn it but it is obviously not going to do anything. The cam/fan (?) belt is still there and going round, I've taken the ECU of and made sure there is no dust, I've checked oil and water and now I'm desperate!

Call me a genius if you must, but I think there is a connection between the noise I first heard and my dead engine!! Thanks for any help guys.

Thanks Mark, I've been playing around since I posted where I got confused was there is a belt that you can see as soon as you open the bonnet. Next to that is a black box with a sticker saying ' change every ?????? miles. I thought the sticker was for the belt I could see.

But no. After curiosity lead me to open the box to see what was inside, I could see wheel pulley type wheels but no belt......oh, there it is....in bits!!

Actually, I got it priced about three weeks ago because I wanted it done (there's no guarantee of when it was last done) but one thing lead to another. My lesson learnt!

Just out of interest, how many miles has your car done, and does it have a full Volvo SH?

I'd be interested in an update as to the repair, and costs - if it's not too nosey.

Lei,

Don't worry, if I expect/hope for people to help with the enquiries I, and others, put to them, I cannot possibly find it nosey to ask a question back. And I will be endeavour to answer it as best as I can. (Although nothing about salaries or below the belt :P !)

The car had 125,000 and most service history.
Volvo specialist wants £900, all in, just to replace the valves.
But there is still a chance of the guides (?) being damaged from the bent valves. Which would mean a new cylinder head - £1400 + labour + vat. Risky £900 if you ask me. The total of that would take me over what the car is worth.

So, I really have a new question to you all,

How do I go about finding an OK second hand cylinder head and cam tray, or engine and I'll just tell Volvo to take what they need? Or does anybody recommend I get rid of it for spares and how much should I expect? Most scrappies you have to pay them to take away the car but when I phoned up many scrappies for spares (on this volvo) these are some of the responses I got:

"ha,ha,ha, you got to be joking!"
"like gold dust, mate!"
"all my go straight to a garage"

It goes on but you all get the picture! Subframe £250, Panels £70, Glass, £20.... That adds up to a lot more plus the original £50 they got. Cheers guys.

Alun,

Power Engineering in Uxbridge might, I say might be able to help you.

Every time I have been in there they seem to be rebuilding fast car engines, Ford Cosworths, Mitso EVOs etc. etc.... so while they're not a volvo specialist - they do engine rebuilds and have contacts in that trade. They are also cheaper labour wise than volvo.

They have done suspension and exhaust work on my T5R and were really good.

Its just a suggestion - they may tell you they cant help, but its gotta be worth a go considering Volvo dealer prices.

Best Regards - and good luck!

Phil :-)
