2002 V40 coil spring

Good morning
My husband has just changed the front nearside coil spring as it was broken but there is still a graunching noise when he turns the steering wheel HELP!!!! 😳

It's probably the upper mount or bearing that's faulty. If the spring is structurally sound and correctly fitted it's unlikely to make a noise.

Been there! The spring is probably in upside down. Take it out and put it back in the other way up.

Has to be put in against the stops or the spring will turn in it's seat. Turn the steering lock to lock, when on the ground and see if its moving. You might even hear where the noise is coming from.

On these springs the ends are 'handed' as far as I remember so that if you put it in albeit correctly against the stops and it's upside down it's 180 degrees out and the spring 'bulges' out when the car is back on the ground and one coil rubs against the inside of the suspension turret. If it's in the correct way round, it compresses 'straight' and clears the inside of the turret. The genuine Volvo strings have a paint mark to identify the bottom end of the spring. That's where I went wrong the first time because on my (previous) Mercedes the paint mark identified the top of the spring. Because I didn't have the proper information to hand I assumed the paint mark denoted the top end of the spring and so fitted it upside down. It made 'orrible graunching noises when adding steering lock. I knew I had correctly seated it when I built the strut up so I reckoned I'd fitted it upside down. Did the job again but reversed the spring and all was well. Second time I got it wrong was with an after market spring which had no paint marks on it and I eye-balled it. 50/50 chance of it being wrong and guess what...it was. Turned the spring over and 'orrible noises gone. Teach me to buy cheap after-market springs!!
