Turbo not kicking in
Volvo V70 - 2008
Engine code: D5244T5 (2.4D) Yesterday a message appears in the rev counter display: "Engine service required" or something along those lines. The turbo kicks in between 1500 and 2000 revs and you can really notice it, but this time when accellerating the engine was lazy as a limp horse. I stopped the engine and restarted and used the stalk on the left side of the steering wheel column to read the message which disappeared. After that the turbo kicked in as usual. Anyone who has experienced the same? |

Likely you have the start of a boost leak, but there are many other likely causes as well.... you're best option by far is to get the error codes (DTC) read by a Volvo dealer or Indie with the correct equipment - it may tell you exactly what the problem is.

I assume it is the turbo not kicking in, since there's no other symptoms than a lack of power when the turbo usually kicks in. -The lack of power isn't limp-mode behaviour,-more like my gasolin 120 hp non turbo volvo V40.
The lack of power isn't permanent, after resetting the error message and a restart the turbo kicked in as usual last night. However the problem re-emerged this morning. I wonder if this engine has a turbo control valve that may be the cause? |

It is probably the DPF getting full, it will restrict performance until a regen has taken place.
I would advise getting the fault codes read at Volvo and a forced regen done. The DPF is a service item every 70k miles, should cost less than £50 for an exchange unit at volvo.

Check the soot weight (in grams) its possible to get a loss of performance without it showing a DTC if it is trying to regen (technically not a fault condition).
If soot is 40g or more probably needs a regen cycle forced in ViDA.

Did a scan with Vida/Dice:
ECM-P029900 Definition: Turbo/Super Charger Underboost. Cause: Damaged turbocharger (TC) control valve. Air leakage in the intake system. Damaged turbo charger (TC). Damaged relief valve. Hoses between the pressure servo for the boost pressure control (BPC) valve and the turbocharger (TC) control valve have come loose or are blocked or damaged. Sticking boost pressure control (BPC) valve. Damaged boost pressure control (BPC) valve pressure servo. ECM-P010117 Possible Causes Faulty mass air flow sensor Intake air leaks Dirty mass air flow sensor Dirty mass air filter Mass air flow sensor harness is open or shorted Mass air flow sensor circuit poor electrical connection These fault codes were not present two weeks ago, so it's safe to assume they both appeared at roughly the same time and are therefore related. My guess is a vacuumleak. Smoketest next step . . . |

I have been chasing down this issue with a d5 205bhp twin turbo...it's a pain.
In my case, there is no loss of performance, just the same error message. The problem was diagnosed (professionally following a smoke test and diagnostic) as the TMAP on the intercooler - at the moment I can't be sure as I tried an aftermarket part and it's the wrong one so I'll probably have to buy the Volvo part and pay the expense. I also know for sure that the sensor on the inlet is likely to be faulty and will replace that too (it was absolutely encrusted with 'gunk') byt that's a 5 minute fix, and I can get a suitable Bosch part. One thing that can supposedly cause this issue is a dirty fuel filter - I would check that as a matter of course.

Everyone including a Volvo mechanic pointed at the TMAP-sensor. However, in that particular case it turned out to be a crack in a hose and loose hoseclamps. |

Could be any one of a number of things - boost sensor on intercooler, sensor on manifold, turbo control sensor, turbo leak, bad turbo...which is why I paid for a smoke test and a 'proper' diagnostic.
