If you are down a 1/5 of the brake fluid you are probably well down on the pad fabric....it is worth a check as even if the brake warning pad warning light doesn't come on you may have too little fabric left on the pads for an emergency stop from speed, at which point the metal of the pads willlscore the discs...

Whilst they do need doing ideally, they are not on their last legs as yet and it will be a d&p job anyway as they have felt slightly warped from day 1, it must be a volvo thing? numerous cars since my last volov an none had warped discs

It is more likely to be a build-up of pad fabric and glue due to keeping the footbrake applied after braking to rest rather than use the handbrake - one way to check is to jack the front up, take off the wheel and rotate the each discs using a stick or pointer to check for wobble as the disc goes round, the quicker and easier method is to apply the brakes heavily from speed several times in a very short period to get the discs really hot which strips the muck off the disc - the only problem with that method is if you are down to the critical pad thickness you end up with little or no pad fabric left at best or at worst heavily scored discs if you strip the fabric - always worth cleaning the discs with disc cleaner if you are only replacing the pads.

Just to update on this one, i have now completed the front brakes and driven about 150 miles so far, now when I double tap, there is no difference, so that's a good start, although I do miss that extra sharpy part, but then I've not stamped on the brakes as yet, more so cause it said sommat about a 500 mile bedding in, so I will try to adhere to that.

I did replace the discs, pads, and flushed out the fluid, no cruddy fluid came out though but at least that and a bleeding is done, there was nothing wrong with the old parts other than worn about half way, the discs hardly had a lip on them but there was one and decent gouging on one side.
