I would indeed always detach the negative terminal. I have had to unbolt the positive terminal under the hood a few times due to CEM problems and I was scared as hell I would touch the chassis with the wrench... (There are stories of this happening in a submarine (with vastly bigger battery banks as they can run of off their batteries for a long while). And when the wrench made contact between the positive terminal and the hull, it (literally) evaporated!)

Thank you, that is a very nice solution. I tried something similar with some spare wire I had already but the wire wasn't thick enough and started to melt!
