Well it is seeming like a euro 3 so happy days no dpf. I am
Picking it up tomorrow so hope all is well.

I will definitely put top notch oil in by the look of things. Its only a extra £20 for that piece of mind the engine is as lubed as it gets.

I just really hope the shell is good enough to service well and moon mile

Doesn't need to be too expensive, https://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-69382-c...ngine-oil.aspx

The shell is a great oil for these and with current offer £30 for a fill!
I use Fuchs 0w40 which was £35 a gallon but has shot up to £42 making the castrol the best value 0w40.

I wouldn't rush into either unless they are provably bad.

Plenty of D5s over a quarter of a million miles with original water pumps and thermostats.

Hi

Talking of auto gearboxes. I drive a ‘05 XC70 with an Aisin 55-51. It’s done 230k and runs okay. Having only hade it for the past 5k should I be considering changing oil in the gearbox? I’ve no idea when it was last done.

Yes, do a drain & fill (D&F).
Doing it yourself? It'll only cost you 4 litres of fluid and an 18mm aluminium crush washer. A 24mm spanner and a catch pan is all else you'll need.

You'll then see how dirty the fluid is.

Thanks Georgeandkira. I’ve heard “war stories” of oil changes after so many miles ruining the gearbox; stopping it change gear properly.

The default oil is 0w30 A3/B4 on the E3 engine, so is 0w40 an even higher spec'n with respect to operating in higher ambient temperatures? It seems like the availability of the standard oil is getting less and less and I'm increasing tempted to go for either 0w40 or 5w40 - are these perfectly acceptable? The handbook would suggest so so I'm wondering what the merits/ demerits of these grades are.....
Cheers,
Nobby
