Why not take off the cem and clean it first.
My diag reader sent me loads of crazy error messages when plugged in before i cleaned the cem up using contact cleaner and a toothbrush.

Hi

Its not as difficult as it looks, well not on my S40.
Mine failed the mot due to the mil "not" coming on at start up.
After trying out a new display unit with no luck i resorted to the cem clean.
This fixed it although the cem showed no signs of any faults.
Remember to disconnect the battery first, then make a note of what goes where then take the unit off the car.
Use good contact cleaner and a softish tooth brush to clean the connectors.
Also remove clean and refit each fuse.
When refitting take care not to unclip the holders as i did!!!.
Also leave a window/door open before taking off the battery.
Good luck, did mine 18 months ago and no more issues.
I have a hunch that on the S40 cem wires get dislodged when pulling it around during the cabin/pollen filter change.
