Spare Wheel
I am looking for a space saver and/or full size 18" spare wheel. Only have inflator at the moment and will be doing long distance tour in Europe this summer with caravan so would like to have a spare as well. Please PM me if you can help.

spare wheel update
As I half expected I got no offers of a spare wheel so I have just bought a new Tempa spare with winch and tools from FRF Swansea. Great service and recommended. I will now be happier towing in Europe this summer.

spare wheel
Frank, just about to take ownership of 06 xc90 and horrified by the fact that there is no spare wheel. Have had costly experiences with inflation kits in the past and like yourself plan to do some travel in mainland Europe in the summer.
What's the story with buying/fitting spare wheel yourself, was it costly? Can someone with little car experience do it or should I hand it over to a mechanic? Many thanks, Ciara |

I fitted the space saver spare myself without any real problems. Ordered all the parts from Rufe - Simon at FRF Volvo - he was very helpful. I think I was the first to order the full kit to do it from him. You need: 18" space saver spare wheel complete with tyre (I assume you have 18") Set of 5 wheel bolts for steel wheel (alloy bolts are not suitable) Winch Winch handle Jack Total cost was about £330 but you may already have some of the bits like the jack & winch handle Method: Remove the blanking plate from the floor in the storage compartment which is over the hole for the winch. It is between the two rear seats. I then had to loosen the seat fixings very slightly to squeeze the winch into the aperture. Refix seats and bolt down the winch using the same bolts off the blanking plate. Let out the winch cable and fit to the spare as shown in the owners handbook. When raising the wheel take care to locate it properly against the floor - it needs to be manhandled a little but I did it OK. Hope this helps Frank |

I would check your kit to see if there is a separate full set of bolts for the steel wheels. If it came with the space saver as original option it should have them. I had what I thought was a set but it was the original 4 alloy wheel bolts that were removed to fit the lockable wheel studs. Frank |

The reason I got the different bolts for the space saver is the warning note in the owners manual which states: "NOTE: There are two different types of wheel bolts depending on whether or not your car has steel or aluminium rims, bolts used with aluminium rims have a loose, rotating ring. Bolts used with steel rims have no rotating ring. Make sure to use the correct type of bolt. If you are unsure , check with the nearest Volvo workshop." Do you know that the steel space saver wheel has been designed specially to work with the aluminium wheel bolts? If so does this mean that the space saver must be used with those bolts only and not with the steel wheel bolts. Frank |

Volvo havent used steel wheels since 2000 , The XC 90 , V70 , S60 , since then have all had alloy wheels with a space saver steel spare and NO different bolts supplied when new ... The changeover to the bolts with the loose ring appeared in about 2002
even the S80 which came out in 1998 with steel wheels had the same bolts as the alloy wheeled cars . volvo UK have never supplied extra bolts for the space saver with any of their new cars . I have seen many used with the alloy wheel bolts with no problem I'll report back wth any fresh news ..

You CAN use the steel spare with the alloy wheel bolts according to a volvo bulletin ... Just like we have all been doing for at least the last 10 years , In fact i have never known of separate bolts for a spare wheel , volvo have certainly never supplied any with any new cars in the last 30 years ...
