Default Engine System Service Required - Fault 097

Hi all, very strange intermittent fault, error 021 and/or 097 according to the dash, causing the Engine System Service Required message to appear (and disappear) at random.

Phoned the local Volvo dealers, who can't look at the car properly until Thursday, can't offer a courtesy car, but can possibly, if I get it to them at 8am tomorrow, look at the error code and prepare an eye watering quotation for them to fix it. I kind of need to know if it'll actually reach the local dealers (although it's got Volvo recovery).

I encountered the service earlier this year, just before the car went in for it's service (at the local Volvo dealers) and they couldn't find any error codes at the time, despite being told of the occurrence.

I know, from poking about, the error code 097 USED to refer to an air sensor on the older models, just wondering if that may be the case here and whether it's likely to be a sensor or dirty/corroded wiring issue. Not sure what error 021 formerly referred to so any help on that would be appreciated.

Not sure if it's related, but the READ and RESET buttons on the DIM have both stopped working recently, presuming it's not but thought I'd toss it in just in case.

Thanks in advance...

Engine system Service required light went out, did 300+ miles, message back again. Anybody know if the 097 error message displayed on the dashboard would tally with high oil level ? Oil is probably just a fraction below the MAX mark on the dipstick (it still has an old fashioned big dipstick being an 08MY)

I'm thinking, with the engine message coming and going, it's perhaps likely to be a fluid level related problem rather than something else. It also only occurs when the engine is hot, so wondering if that may also have something to do with the issue. I'd reckon if I go out tomorrow morning, the message will disappear after a couple of minutes, but if I'm getting fuel dilution of the engine oil, I'd rather drop the oil level and top it up with fresh oil or replace the engine oil entirely before something more serious occurs.

The error message occurring before, just prior to it's annual service (with oil change) makes me wonder if the error is oil related and was sorted with an oil change during servicing.

I did get an independent garage to look at the car after the message disappeared, they only found one error code, 012200 but that was from a Delphi system and it (unusually) provided no information on the error code.
