What is correct oil for 93 auto box??
Can anyone recommend a good quality oil/atf for a 1993 model 850 auto-box?
Also what is the correct type, Dex 11e or Dex 111? Is there a difference? My auto has 156,000 miles, shifts smooth up and down and does not slip so I am keen to preserve its life. Thank you for your help. Matt 93 850 GLT auto 156,000 miles |

RE: What is correct oil for 93 auto box??
The correct oil is Dexron IIe
This is formulated specifically for the characteristics of electronically controlled auto boxes.

I think you will find DexronIIe has been superceded by DexronIII. Volvo now specify DexronIII with an 'F' license.

I was in a hurry so I used Castrol from Halfords, if you look on the pack you will see the license information. I think most are 'F'.
You can of course buy from a Volvo dealer or Nordic. |

RE: What is correct oil for 93 auto box??
Matt, USA users seem to strongly recommend synthetic (Mobil 1 or Amsoil). I'm in Canada (Alberta). I've bought Mobil 1 (16 litres!)which they suggest is required for do-it-yourself. It's -26C with a wind chill to -43C, so it won't be done till later. I'm computer illiterate but try http://brickboard.com/AWD/? Also, bay13 has info. I can't remember how I accessed it (but it was through brickboard). 1997 855AWD 5spd, 1999 V70AWD R. Cheers!

Matt
absolutely DON'T use engine oil in the auto box. Synthetic oil (can be engine type) is used in the manual gearbox. If you use Mobil 1 or similar in your auto box you will scrap it very quickly. Regards

mobil use the mobil 1 brand for gear oils and atf as well as engine oils. I presume they mean this http://www.mobil.com/USA-English/Lub...ntheticATF.asp
but I would check with them that it does meet the spec. Although I dont know how dexron 2 / 3 etc differ. |

The Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF as in the link is NOT the same as Mobil 1 engine oil that is commonly available in the UK (and by which Mobil 1 is most commonly known here)
