What a difference the locking tool makes to getting the crank nut off! I was expecting it to go with an almighty crack when it came free , but no drama at all . I actually thought that the socket extension must be shearing or something ,but it was just the nut turning. |

With the engine now timed properly , it still sounds rough and is still smokey. Guess the head will be coming off now then . |

As the valves are vertical in the combustion chamber they tend not to bend when hit by the piston , they get pushed straight up which puts a big load on the camshaft and rockers , this breaks the bearing caps which are frail and designed to do this to absorb the huge forces , also the rockers between camshaft and valve stem take a huge blow which distorts them and they bend or break which also puts a side load on the actual hydraulic tappet and this breaks the bore in the head which the tappet fits into writing off the head , the pistons etc below usualy escape any serious damage .

Someone mentioned to me today something about the diesel pump may be out of timing .
I confess , I dont have a clue what they are on about (no mention of this in Haynes manual). I thought all I had to do was insert the camshaft pin and the crankshaft pin and then rotate the engine anticlockwise till it came to a stop on the pin ? This is what I did ,and both the marks lined up on the casing as well . Have I missed something as regards the pump? |
