XC60 D4: to sell, or not to sell?

…That is the question.

I bought a D4 2015 MY15 with 113,000 on the clock in May 2018 for £11k. I’ve done about 20,000 miles in 4 years. Most is short town driving with a half dozen cross country journeys a year to see family.

The car had the EGR issue and replacement done just before I bought it so felt comfortable with the purchase. Since then, in 2019, and again in late 2020, the EGR has been replaced by Volvo (can’t remember if that’s the EGR valve or the cooler) with 100% goodwill contributions. So that’s around 6000-7000 miles between the 3 EGR replacements. All serving has been at Volvo main dealership.

Now, another 7000 miles later, I have the same fault again (P04. Volvo confirmed the fault codes as EGR and blocked inlet manifold. I understand I will need to cover the cost of the inlet manifold myself, but would be pretty irate if Volvo didn’t cover 100% the EGR replacement again - they have set a precedent and I would like to hear the excuse if the don’t cover it.

So, to my questions…
1. When fixed, should I sell the car? Perhaps a diesel is not suited to our usage.
1a. If not sell, could/should I delete the EGR?
2. If sell, what car could I replace it with? The XC60 car ticks all our boxes; good size, nice spec, etc - we have no wish to replace it, except the issue is likely to recur again after 12 months.
2a. Car is valued around £7.5k trade-in, or £9k private. It seems really hard to find another car at that price, size, spec, mileage, petrol, auto, as good as the XC60. Audi Q5? Lexus RX400h?

3. Has anyone on this board had an EGR replaced 4 times??

If you like it, keep it. Get it fixed and you know that’s the only problem. Buy another and take on another potential series of issues.

If you like the car, why not just budget another £200 a year for a Terraclean every 6000m and a splash of Miller's additive (either Power Max or their DPF cleaner) every other month? Plus a thrash on the motorway to blow away the carbon cobwebs certainly won't do it any harm at all.

Cheaper than buying something you don't like as much.

It sounds like your usage doesn't suit a diesel engine.

Perhaps a petrol vehicle is the solution.

This. Dieselcars makes sense only if you drive longer distances. Atleast some times. It will also use a lot of fuel and takes longer times to get warm in the winter. A lot of engine problems relates to short distance driving.

I agree with the above, junk the doesel and go petrol.
