Brake cylinder dust seal replacement -insitu?
Today while checking the rear brake shoes on the V70 I noticed that the dust cover on one of the cylinders had split. I don't really want to remove the caliper to replace just a seal as it could lead to shearing other components ie bleed nipples on re assembly.
Is it feasible to extend the damaged piston, remove and then replace the cylinder dust cover in situ?? I have looked on Vida but can't find a "how to" guide, perhaps I'm looking in the wrong place. The guides on the web show removal/fitting of the seals with the brake cylinder removed, and some look horrendous - attacking the caliper with hammers and chisels..... I have the 4 pot Brembo brakes so I guess parts will be Cheap..... not Cheers Bob |

Yes. Planning on doing that this weekend. Taking the cliper off means you can clean it easier though.

Can you let me know how to attach the seal ie to the piston first then the cylinder, or vice versa.
I did this years ago on a Maxi but can't remember how I did it - I do remember dad made a set of wooden tools so that we did not damage the seal, and it was not plain sailing. Cheers Bob |

I think there is a metal clip on the caliper side and no clip on the cylinder side. You should be able to push the caliper inside to clear the metal clip. I'd make sure the bleeder is open while moving the piston, usually I put a 1-2' plastic tube over the bleeder then into a can

Sorted???
My V70 AWD R has AWD issues and I am unwilling to spend money on it until I can get it through another MOT early May. It occurred to me that I had used super glue to successfully bond together the "o" ring seal on my T5's and R's turbo's charge pipe. I therefore decided to see how good a repair I could do on the small cut in the brake cylinder boot seal. It was going to my indi guy as I could not face any bleed nipple issues.
I have to say I was surprised how easy it was to sort. Adhesion was almost instant (wear latex gloves is a must) and a couple of 3/4 piston extensions failed to pull the boot apart. So its all back together and I'll report back - assuming I can find this thread, how things turned out in May. New seal (from Volvo circa £ 47 incl discount + say hours labour = good saving) Cheers Bob |
