Default K&N 57i Noises

Just fitted a 57i and Volvo Strut brace to my 96 T5 Estate.Believe it or not, I think the Filter has improved my Fuel economy!! According to my computer I'm averaging 30.6 mpg on B roads!!Whippee!!

Anyway, the reason I'm sending this post is to ask a question,:- Has anyone else fitted a 57i kit, and found there to be more noise on overrun? It says in the instruction sheets that you may experience more noise, but mine sounds like a bloody great dump valve going off!!! Of course this is an exageration, but I am a little concerned!!

Regards

Nigel,

Induction kits are much more noisy than the OE airbox.... thats part of the point!

Dont worry about it, and enjoy the ROAR ;)

Best Regards,

Phil :-)

Nigel,

The noise that you are getting on over-run with the 57i kit, is air from the recirculation valve on the turbo being dumped into the inlet pipe between the air filter and turbo. With the standard air-box fitted you can't hear it.

Neil.

Nigel,

I too fitted a K&N kit to my T5 a couple of weeks ago and I get the same noise as you mention on overrun.

In fact, when trying it out immediately after fitting, I stopped the car when I heard it and got out to check I had fitted it correctly. I thought it was something rubbing in the wheel arch. :+ :+ :+

Have you noticed though, that it only does it when driving the car, not when you rev up while stationery ??

Which Brace did you fit, cause thats something else I'm looking at getting. Where did you get it from and was it a pain to fit ??

Regards,

Marcel

Marcel, The Strut Brace I fitted is from Volvo. I got it at the Local Main Dealer, Somertons in Newport. It cost £75 inc vat, and fitted straight on in about 15 minutes!! It does make a difference to the feel of the car.

Thanks for the info on the 57i, I was a little bit worried, but only a little bit!!

Regards

Nigel

Hi Marcel,

Just wondering if it is an easy job to fit a K&N 57i kit.

Did you leave the bottom of the old air filter box in place with its ducting or remove it all?

Andy,

I noticed your post to Marcel, and have some info that may be of use to you....

I have seen induction kits fitted both with, and without the bottom of the old airbox, and with and without the original cold air duct.

A very efficient way of getting really cold, dense air to an induction kit, is to replace the front foglights (or use the holes next to them) with the little intake ducts from the demon tweeks catalogue and route the pipes from these up to the induction kit. This gives really good ram-air as the intakes are so low down - just beware if you drive through a flood!!!

Hope that may be of some use.

Best Regards,

Phil :-)

Andy,

It was not a major prob to fit. It took about 15 Mins all in.

I did leave the bottom of the old air filter box in situ with its ducting, and placed the 57i in that. I also used the ducting pipe supplied in the kit and routed it down past the battery and angled it forwards and cable tied it just behind the small air duct in the front valance below the headlight. I then also cable tied the top end of the pipe to the original air filter air feed pipe and positioned it approx 3" from the K&N.

Hope this helps.
