I was thinking exactly the same GMad, I am one who uses Winter tyres through my own choice. Is that allowed???

Sad person that I am I have read all 15 pages and my comments are:-
Had an occasion where I was caught in a snow storm, once visability improved I was quite happy to cruse at 50mph on 2" of fresh snow along a dual carrageway with the original spec Mitchalin 195 60 15 tyres. When the weather is bad I leave the volvo on the drive and use the 20 year old landrover for the simple reason with AT tyres fitted the old 300 tdi engine will control the vehicle with very little use of the brakes, driveing on the gears as used to be taught 40 years ago when I passed my test. I have NPTC off road driveing qualification and in snow and ice as in mud and wet grass the important thing is to keep the wheels turning thereby retaining control of vehicle, by driveing on the gears and engine I can roll to a stop only needing the brakes at the last moment to come to a halt and stay stopped. This drivability is I feel being lost in newer vehicles, especialy diesel engined ones as modern engines have little or no engine brakeing, certainly my 10 plate works sprinter van needs brakes on all hills or the engine is screaming on the limiter at 4k rpm on the overrun. Is it prehaps this lack of drivability in modern cars that makes winter tyres with their better grip so desirable? Or prehaps my older vehicles, volvo 14 years landrover 20 years better suit my driveing style and I am comfortable with the tyres fitted to them. Regards Paul. |

Summer tyres look more like doughnuts, therefore more popular with the police.
