Hi Tatsfield, I was also advised to try the forward and reverse 20 times method, unfortunately although I wouldn't say don't try it, it definitely didn't work for me.
To The Edge, there must be a good specialist with vida near Birmingham
I wish you well

The only issue - irritation really - is the intermittent thud into D from R. It seems otherwise fine.
your nearest volvo dealer can update the gearbox software you don't have to go all the way to Birmingham...
You are right the gearbox ISN'T sealed for life! Volvo have a service schedule for it, but it isn't mandatory it is optional as whether you choose to have it done or not. It depends how much you value your auto gearbox really. If it were mine I would have the oil changed every 72000 miles for normal use and 36000 miles for towing or taxi work.

I'm not sure this happens to all modules - would appreciate your view?

4 years ago I bought a 2015 XC60 D5 with 98k on it and full Volvo history with Lloyd Volvo in Carlisle. Had clunking between P,D & R when hot. Fluid change did not resolve and as the old fluid looked like new I'm guessing it had been done already. Paid for the TCM software update and this resolved all the issues, I was told it had never been done judging be the version installed.

So either not all modules are updated or in this specific case the dealer did not do it when they should have?

Even if dealers do what they are supposed to do, there were/are modules that aren't updated at regular service since it takes too long time.

Like the infotainment system is normally never updated unless there's some problem, since it takes more time than for the oil to drain from the engine.

Good morning to All
Just a quick update on my geartronic issues, it's been just over a week now since my original post, I have used the car daily with absolutely seamless gear changes, no 'thudding ' into drive or any other issues whatsoever, so I'm still delighted with the software update, which I'm calling an early Xmas present to myself.

Very Merry Christmas, and A Happy New Year to you all
