Default Ignition Lock !!

Hi to all

i have owned a 1998 R reg S70 for about 3 months now and noticed this weekend that sometimes when i place the ignition key in the lock to start the engine, the key spins freely in its barrel.

This only happens when the steering lock is on [ie the steering wheel is locked]

if i take out the key wobble the steering wheel ..re-insert the key it engages first time, unlock steering wheel and starts car.

Question :

Is this normal ?
Is the ignition barrel buggered ?
Is it a quick fix that i can do ?
Will WD40 work ?

Cheers to anyone that can help

Geoff

This is supposed to happen if the wrong key is used to prevent the lock being forced in a theft attempt . But if you are using the correct key then it is faulty . I would renew it before you get stranded .

Cheers Clan...do you mean replace the key or the ignition barrel or both.

As far as i know the keys are original and it happens with both the main key and the spare key.

Any thoughts ?

The Ign key is , or should be the same as the door , you buy the lock from your volvo dealer , order it with the same key number as you already have ...
It is best to take the steering column out as there is a sheared off security bolt ( or two ) to drill out .
