All done (and fixed, it seems after a decent test drive).
Its easy when you have got the right tools. One of these: + a long extension bar + penetrating oil = success. The old sensor looked properly knackered: Dont know if its just a placebo effect, but the car seems to drive much, much nicer (and smoother) than before.

Bugger, I spoke too soon.
After about 150km of driving it came back (and disappeared again!). I managed to get VIDA on the car whilst the fault was present. When the car is running in limp mode, the temp reading from VIDA for the DPF sensor is a constant 349.96C.... and it remains frozen. As soon as the ECU gets live readings again, limp mode disappears. There looks to be 3 temp sensors in the exhaust system. 2 on the manifold and one more just after the flexi pipe under the car. Ive changed one of the manifold sensors.... does anyone know specifically which the other two are (im guessing the one after the flexi is the lambda, and therefore I should change the other manifold sensor)? Ive changed the sensor on the left this morning - I presume ill have to change the one on the right as a next step?

Progress, the end should be in sight.
Ive identified all three sensors, and therefore also the problem. The Volvo dealer sold me the wrong part Monkeys! The sensor they sold me (left side, top of manifold) is the CAT temp sensor, as verified here when unplugged: The slightly larger sensor on the manifold (right side) is the O2/lambda sond, as verified when removed: The sensor accessed under the car and connected just between the flexi section of exhaust and the middle box is the DPF temp sensor. When removed: Giving the same default/constant 349.96C value: So, back to the dealer on Monday to get them to supply the correct part this time, then (hopefully) all should be well.

All sorted.
Two hours work at the garage to make a new thread. Looks like they have also held it in with a bit of liquid metal or similar. As long as this sensor lasts another 150k km+ I shouldnt need to remove it again Touch wood! Part number for the DPF sensor under the car is: 31431046
