1980's Volvo Radio Cassette info
I've just acquired a 'period' (about 1980) stereo for the 262C. On the front panel it is called the: 'Volvo Top Executive ESD' and on top of the the metal casing it has a label that describes the unit as:- VOLVO 4 Stereo, RX-90NK-2, 12v NEG Ground, Genuine VOLVO Accesssories.
It has a BNC aerial connection as well as the usual car radio banana plug socket sort. It is a 4 speaker system with Front/Rear Fader and L/R balance control. I have the user/owner manual that came with it, but not the wiring diagram. Can anyone help out/ direct me to a source of this info? Thanks Andy |

RE: 1980's Volvo Radio Cassette info
Around this time, Volvo used to sell a radio cassette with a record function, the bnc is used commonly to carry video but in this case could be a connection for an external microphone. Any chance of posting some pics?

Thanks Tony,
Here are some pix, limited in definition so the file size is not toooo hhhuge! Even so it is about 500 kbytes, so it'll take maybe a minute to download-unless of course you are 'broadbanded'! Regards Andy <img source="http://www.greatrissington.com/volvoradio/VRadPix.jpg"> |

RE: 1980's Volvo Radio Cassette info
I'm fortunately broadbanded! Avi as far as I can tell was an early traffic information service piloted in Holland and Germany in the late seventies/early eighties, this bnc could be the link cable between the radio and some form of data recovery unit or receiver. It's an eduacated guess but but I could be completely wrong of course.
Maybe someone here can translate this - Afkortingen/Förkortningar AVI: Automatische verkeersinformatie in onder andere Duitsland Automatisk trafikinformation i bland annat Tyskland |

RE: 1980's Volvo Radio Cassette info
Thanks Tony,
Unless by some miracle I can actually get hold of the proper technical info for the unit, I guess it'll be best to leave all the 'odd' bits alone and just install it! Thanks for your help though. All that Dutch or German is very impressive. Where did it come from?!!!!! Andy |

Great site, if you understand Dutch and Swedish! Actually it is fairly easy to decode. All the best, Peter |

Seeing as I know both Dutch and Swedish, I'll have a go:
Afkortingen/Förkortningar Abbreviations AVI: AVI Automatische verkeersinformatie in onder andere Duitsland Automatic traffic information in among other (countries) Germany Automatisk trafikinformation i bland annat Tyskland George Anglo-Swede resident near Leuven in Belgium '87 745 GLE Turbo Diesel Intercooler (D24TIC/M46, 200k) '88 745 Turbo Intercooler (B230ET/M46, 270k) '88 745 GL (B200E/M47, 200k) '89 440 GL (B18K/M55, 90k) |

Thanks everyone. The 'Top Executive' is listed as Tony said, on Volvo200.org site. Reckon I'll just have to get the babelfish!
Cheers Andy |

Thanks for advice/info 1980's Volvo Radio Cassette
Well, thanks to Tony Flynn and all. Installed the good old VOLVO 'Top Executive' stereo yesterday. Works a treat.
It's a surprisingly high quality output, better than a couple of more modern units I've had occasion to use in the last ten years or so. They got the FM squelching right and it switches everso well between stereo & mono as the FM signal changes. Locally that's important because there's lots of dead(ish) spots on the trips around here. Anyhow thanks again those who chipped in. If anyone is interested to actually view the thing, I'll probably be at both VOC National & Gaydon this year. Regards Andy |
