Default Dealership Prices

Hello All,

From an entry in the 900/v90 forum I see mention of a dealership charging £90 per hour. Even my solicitor charges less than that!

What are the prices around the country? This is for costs only and is not intended to be a 'quality league' table. It may be that some people will be able to save a bit by travelling slightly further for franchised or non-franchised work.

Franchised in Edinburgh - £52 per hour
Non-franchised in Edinburgh - £26 per hour

From the minute I walked in, I had bad wibes and it took them 10 minutes to make me swear I would never put my foot in the place again, so help me God! They are obnoxious, ignorat, stupid, fraudulent and useless. I meet the parts manager, the sales manager, the service manager and the general manager and they all treated me as if I was a piece of dog poo under their shoe. They knew nothing about cars and even less about Volvos.

Oh George!!!!
Of course they treat you badly because that is how dealerships make their money!!! They sell you a car claiming it to be the best thing in the world and when you try to trade it in then the car is the wrong colour, high mileage, a model nobody wants etc.etc. Then they sell you little pieces for the car that would be dearer weight for weight than solid gold. As for knowledge of the car I have found some parts departments (not all I will add) rely on some computer system and you identifying the part on screen. Some garages treat people like fools and what fools we are. We buy something with a deliberate depreciation value. If you bought a car, drove it ten miles and tried to sell it back you would be well out of pocket. Its just as well our houses dont depreciate as fast or my 20 year old house would be scrapped by now. And what do stupid buyers do. Rush out and buy a new car as soon as they can afford it. The trouble in the UK is that cars are usually bought with somebody elses money...either a loan or as a business purchase. Keep running the older models George and find alternative sources for spares as I do. Cheers Nige

Just to add to that, I would never buy a new car for exactly that reason. When/if I have the cash for a new car, I'll go for either a pre-registered thing if living in the UK, or a 6 month old car if still in Holland and either upgrade to a better model, or pocket the saving.

And look on the bright side, second hand cars in the UK are *cheap* compared to Holland....

Maindealer in Bradford about £60ph excluding vat!!!!, non-franchised about £30ph....certainly makes a difference when you have a job with a few hours labour. What really gets me is the VAT added on top, just to rub salt into the wounds.

I'm not sure how much the franchised dealer in Sheffield charges, and I'm aware the franchise changed hands recently, but the old ond (Hinclliffes) had a hellish reputation for so-called service.

I have had few experiences with franchised dealers in varoius parts of the UK (including Ford, Vauxhall, Peugeot, Rover, Volvo, Fiat, Chrysler) which would send me to their doors clutching money.

Suffice it to say that a few years ago, when at the helm of a '92 850GLT I started using Gelders, the non-franchised specialist in Sheffield and since then, and despite a 2 1/2 year period of Renault & Ford ownership prior to recently nuying my '98 945, I have seen no need to go anywhere else!

The current rates are less than £30 per hour, all mechanics are very experienced, and I generally get a load car if I give enough notice.

Call them on 0114 266 5937.
