Thanks Mattye,

That's what I asked them to do and they said it wouldn't be safe. Like you, I think it will. And will be the cheapest solution.

I'm thinking their reluctance may be for some other reason.

They haven't contacted us today as they said they would.

We'll see what tomorrow brings.

How do they know it’s rusted if they haven’t taken it out to see, and how can it be rusted if it has been in the oiled environment inside the gearbox?

Not a lot I'm afraid - it's still with them and they're trying to get other people involved.

I have discovered that they have cut through the shaft, " so as to get a better purchase and room to access it " but they still couldn't shift it.

When I remonstrated with them they answered that they could always weld it back on!

I can't see where this is going and wonder if, with all the pulling, they have cracked the gearbox casing.

I'm not expecting a quick or satisfactory conclusion.

Finally I can report that the matter is completed and the car is back in use.

Nobody in my family will ever use Waylands ever again!

They had my wife's car for over three months and repeatedly denied responsibility. Their solution was for my wife to pay for a new gearbox at a cost of more than the car's value.

She declined that.

We then discovered that they had damaged the gearbox by pulling too hard on the shaft. They still denied any responsibility.

Finally they removed the box and sent it to:

(Dave McCoy and Mark Albone who are the managers at )

A1 Premier Transmissions in Biggleswade, tel 01767 601207

They were open and honest with me about what was needed and sent me photos of the dismantled box showing the mangled, pinched, clip which Volvo had told me was rusted solid! It wasn't. It was clean!

They told me they'd had lots of these and in reply to my question, "How many came from Volvo dealers" they replied, "None!"

So my wife is now happily driving her car again.

If anyone needs any gearbox work I recommend them.

It's an expensive job as they have to break into the casting to access and dismantle the diff carrier and remove the gears to reach the damaged clip. Phone them for a quote - it'll be a lot less than a main dealer!
