Default XC70 D5 AWD 2006 Engine Mount Replacement

Hello.

I’m going to tackle the replacement of all the engine mounts on the above – started off by my tracking down a vacuum leak to the front mount and seeing that it was shot.

There are a couple of very good YouTube videos on how to tackle this, albeit not on an AWD. I’ve been advised that the best order to change them is rear, front, side, torque rod and engine mount and that it makes it easier if you remove the engine mount and torque rod at the very beginning.

My question is would it be best to support the engine, undo the bolts for all the mounts, and then replace the rear, front, and side in that order, not placing the top bolts on the rear and front until the side is installed? I can't help feeling that this would give some extra play when lifting the engine. Am I missing something?

Any help appreciated.

Alvin

I think you have to unbolt some mounts to get to others - I'm not familiar with diesels but it was this on my petrol. It's not hard to shuffle things around and unbolt things as you need them so I'd just do them one at a time. It's not a long process at all.

I chickened out of doing the engine mounts on my XC myself so gave it to what was at the time a local volvo independent garage. The garage owner, with about 30 years experience of volvos was much less than complimentary about the time and effort needed to change the rear mount. The next time I went to the garage he had sold up and gone to live abroad. I'm not saying the rear mount was the only factor in his decision but it did make me wonder!

I presume this is specific to AWD variants because I've seen videos of people doing it without going to such lengths?

I would disagree that the rack has to be unbolted, I did the rear mount on my 2005 XC70 without touching the rack

Thanks all for you suggestions guys. The rear seems to be the great unknown on the AWD and if John97Tdi is anything to go by could have implications for the population

@Flyingbathtub - is your 2005 an AWD? If so, any tips on how to tackle it?
