Default V40 with power problems - Help please

Hi

I own a 53 plate V40 115hp with 92 k on the clock. It was one owner from new with full Volvo service history when I got it in August to replace my dying Accord.
Ever since i have had it the mpg has been getting gradually lower until it hit 40mpg (I was getting nearly 50mpg) yesterday, I have also noticed black smoke under acceleration.
I have spoken to a mechanic I know who seemed to think the black smoke was the EGR valve getting clogged and needing to be cleaned.
Tonight on the way home I lost the turbo power. I'm thinking that this is probably the EGR valve now being stuck open. I'm going to have a look at it tomorrow and take the EGR off and clean it to see if it sorts the problem. Does this seem the right course of action and if not what would you reommend.

Thanks

Suz

Hi Suz,
Sometimes it's not always the EGR, give the air filter a quick check and look for any split hoses, as I was reliably informed by a mechanic mate of mine today.
Good luck Bob.
P.S. Were not a million miles apart either I see.

This topic is useful for me too. I got the same situation. I bought my S40 115 HP MY2003 when it was 1,5 year old, with 45.000 km on clock. Imported from Italy. Back then, I got 6,0 l/100 km (39 mpg) and today with 125.000 km I got magical 7.1 liters (33 mpg)!
50 mpg was indeed written on manual, but I think this is very optimistic figure. But if you could reach that as you say, then all the .
I don't often drive on city, I got more regional roads (10 - 20 km) and motorways (25 km). I make around 15.000 to 20.000 km per year and my regular service once per year.
I haven't speak with my mechanic yet, but I would like to know how did (will) you solve the problem.

Chears.
