Default 4 month old XC90 died this morning....

.... engine service light on, into limp mode.

Volvo Assist attended and relocated car to local dealer....

.... phone call this afternoon to say rodents have chewed through the electrics causing the fault:real mad:

Thankfully only £150 to repair, but I'm hopping mad!!

Better get your garage kitted out with some bait stations

Unfortunately no garage - the car is parked on a driveway overnight so not much I can do about it.

That said if I see our local population of squirrels anywhere near it they'll get what for....!!

Parked on the drive or not, I'd want to be pro-active and put down bait stations... You can get various baits and contraptions from DIY stores. We had similar problem in a rented house. The landlord sent round http://www.rentokil.co.uk/index.html

Goddam rats they are everywhere-we have a lake near the road on which we live -totally infested with these vermin-some so large i doubt the cats would fancy their chances

My father had exactly this problem in his Citroen Xsara Picasso several years ago. It/they ate upholstery, trim, wiring etc etc.

The rodent man thought that there was a rat trapped IN the car & it was desperately trying to find a way out!

We left the doors wide open for several days & the problem went away. I would not ignore this nor assume that the rodent has gone.

Thanks all. Car now back and working again complete with one new temperature sensor. Got the old one back, complete with nicely chewed wire in two bits.

Anyone know where on the car this goes?

This does work!
Using blue-tack or anything similarly sticky, attach moth balls around the engine bay and if possible attach some to any visible wiring around the sides of the engine. Had infestation in a 960 many years ago and after doing this there was no more damage or droppings in or around the car. If you can stand the aroma, one or two placed around the inside may give further protection. PLUS you'll never get any moth damage!!

Merry Christmas all and a Happy Volvoing New Year.
Bob.

Are Volvo using organic based plastic now?

I ask because I found a mouse in our house that was living on a box of biodegradable plastic packing. (The kind made with corn starch.) I saw it running back to it's living area carrying the stuff! When I looked at the box of packing it was half gone. I always bin that type of packing straight away now.
