Default Buzzing, whirring, humming noise

Hi All,

My Volvo S60 2004 D5 Auto has just started to make a strange buzzing, whirring, humming type of noise in the front offside engine bay, it’s loudest near the washer fluid reservoir area, the noise stops when the engine is started.

I have posted a video on YouTube, does anybody know what the cause might be and how to fix it?

http://youtu.be/G7NcQzDA4ok

Many thanks in advance.

That's an odd one, does yours have the cooling fan on the ecu box? that's all I can think as that appears on the video to be where the sound is coming from.

I took the lid off the ECU box, there are two modules installed which blocks being able to see anything, I’ve done a bit of googling and to remove the modules to have a better look inside the box you need a special tool which I don’t own.

Good idea of yours though and thank you, I guess this is the most likely explanation for the weird noises being a cooling fan on its last legs. I found a picture of where one would be if you could see it, this now leaves me with more questions!

How much is the ECU removal tool, how much is a replacement fan, how do I dismantle the box to access the fan? I’m never done spending money on my car, but I still love her!

Could also be the alarm siren battery giving up. Try pulling the fuse. If it's that, the noise will be louder behind the front drivers side wheel.

If that picture is of your ecu box, then the fan is the round white object at the back with the red wire coming from it

I'm afraid I don't know the answers to your other questions as I have never had to deal with them before, but I'm sure someone with more knowledge than me will be along shortly

Thanks, but no, that isn't my ECU box.

Mine had a buzzing sound which turned out to be the headlamp wash wipe motor trying to park the wipers, i pulled the fuse and haven't changed the mechanism out. I will replace it next time the bumper has to come off.

I’ve isolated the problem by pulling fuse number 12, a big thanks to Orca2, it was the drivers side headlamp as suggested.

Does the MOT test require the headlamp levelling to be on? because taking out the fuse stops this from working.
