Not quite the same as going from no spare to a space saver, but I put a full size spare into the wife's Kia CEED rather than the space saver, that required raising the boot floor by around 2 inches with some polystyrene slabs around the wheel well. I didn't really make much of it and I don't think she's really noticed.

The issue with these space savers is what you do with the full sized road wheel when you use the spare ?

125/80x17 being replaced by a 235/40x19, the rolling radius might be in the same ballpark the extra 11cms of width does not fit losing another 11cms in boot height reduces the usable boot height down to 26cms.

Suppose you could always ask one of your passengers to hold a full size road wheel on their lap, just hope it's not raining on the day and the farmers have not been out moving the fields onto the roads.

If you buy the genuine Volvo spare, it comes with a bag for the road wheel. Not sure if that helps with space anywhere, but it's a nice afterthought!

I've been robbed ! I bought the genuine kit and I don't recall a bag for my road wheel, I need to go and have a dig around the boot now.

Lexus provided such a bag with my IS300h hybrid. Unfortunately there was no spare wheel, nor room for one, in view of the hybrid batteries being housed in what had on previous, non-hybrid cars been the spare wheel well......

I have 18 in wheels on my new V60 MY 2019. Looking around the websites I have found a space saver wheel which is allegedly suitable for my car.

The seller says in his description:

16 inch spare wheel that is suitable for V60 equipped with any size wheel from the factory.
The law makes an exception for the temporary use of space saver spare wheels fitted in an emergency. Temporary spare wheels could well be of different size to the wheels currently fitted to your vehicle, however this is acceptable, for example fitting a 16 inch spare wheel to your car which has 18 inch alloys is fine.

I have asked for the diameter of the space saver + tyre and it is at least an inch smaller than my alloys.

Can anyone comment on the veracity of this description? In particular, would it be wise/safe to use it bearing in mind it would only be to get home or to a tyre dealer.

I can't vouch for a Volvo but it's the same story on the Kia, space saver about 59cm total diameter, normal alloy and tyre about 63cm. Bear in mind that the space saver is not for driving around on, it's not even a 'get you home' option; it's a limited solution to limp to the nearest garage to get a new tyre on the proper wheel.

You don’t really need a bulky bag for your removed alloy. I always carry a polythene dust sheet to wrap the wheel in and an old bed sheet to cover the back seat if I need to place it there. Oh, and also a torch, gloves and a small heavy duty sheet of polythene to kneel on. It all fits neatly in the spare wheel under the boot floor. Will probably never need to use it (never have so far, touch wood) but best to be prepared.

If its on the driven axil your diff is going to be working overtime, dependant on distance you need to travel I would be putting a full sized wheel from the undriven axil on the driven and the temp spare on the undriven especially when towing.
If you have all wheel drive would still do it as the front are the primary drivers.
