On Monday morning I ordered on line from parts for volvo online a gear shift bushing kit for my S40 and it arrived in the post this morning, Tuesday.
Very good service from this company whom I haven't actually used before. Just to get them fitted now.

Another day and more rain, but, it's on 4 wheels again, cables are done, pads are in and it drivable again. The H/B holds (on the flat) pads moved up to the disc and brake feels firm!
So console to go back in and seats etc but i feel like i am on a winner again! |

The 1/4" set was a bonus really but the 3/8" set could be really useful if they don't break. I could do with a decent 1/4" set for use in restricted spaces so if I get one of those then the halfords ones can go for spares! I have another 1/4" set in with a draper expert 1/4 socket set which are S2 steel and they are pretty good. The draper socket set is the most useful tool set I own!

the little 1/4 set that I got seem fine, and have used the bigger socket based ones a few times without issue, I tend to "misplace" the little ones more often than anything. The new small but handy 3/8 Bahco socket set I got is great (Sweedish stuff for the Volvo lol), probably going to get a 1/4 and 1/2 drive set as well, you can never have to many socket sets, or tools, the halfords set only downside is most of the sockets are 12 point, so more likely to strip round bolts, but having extra sockets is never a bad thing, so will be kept.

This is pretty much the draper socket set I have. I've found it excellent for anything that doesn't require a 14mm or above! That and a set of wickes 'heavy duty' spanners and a 1/2" socket set are what I've used for most jobs for the last 10 or so years. Not all pieces have survived (the wickes ratchet and t-bar for example). Other than a basic set of screwdrivers and pliers that compromises most of my tools. I have a few other bits such as a really good set of locking pliers and a couple of adjustables and a few other bits I've added for specific jobs but thats what I started with and was all I needed to change a clutch and replace the cambelt on my old peugeot 106. Now I have the halfords 200 piece kit (£135) but I still prefer the old tools! The touran turbo replacement will be on day 5 tomorrow so I'm sick of the sight of it, even though my dad is doing most of the work (perhaps why its taking so long). It is virtually impossible to the job without getting crud in everything and the whole engine is covered in oil so its like the black hole of calcutta. Fortunately I had to replace some brake pads this morning so that gave me a break from the VW! I'm not a mechanic by profession, I'm an odd job bloke but mechanicing seems to take up a lot of my time, I'm really slow at it but that is mainly because I'm really fussy about what I'm doing. If I worked in a garage I'd be sacked within days!

I get a bit too fond of tools. They tend to come in threes:
The Old Faithful's are like family. And I love all of them the same. |

Well it's coming together, 8.00 AM it goes in to get the carriers loosed so the rear disc's can be fitted. My guy will do the fronts as well 'cos I bought all new bolts for back and front, cost £14.04 from FRF so it all goes back tidy.
Then, off to the MOT at 2.45pm. Might have time for a coffee between the 2.

Noticed the V40 is smoking a bit (well quite a lot on acceleration). Might try an italian tune up at the weekend.
I drive like a granny most of the time so I'm hoping it just needs a good thrashing. I think my turbo is tired (146'000 miles on it) but I am babying it along as I don't want to replace it. Don't really want the expense or the time and effort to do it! I'm only doing essential repairs at the moment! The touran saga continues. All air pipes flushed, there must be about 7 of them. The intercooler flushed with 7 litres of brake cleaner. Just hoping the engine doesn't blow up or run away when we try to start it tomorrow.

Washing machine vis Key fob
After finishing work and 5 mins after placing my overhauls in the washing machine, my keys were not where they should, in my pocket.
Extracted the keys, opened up the fob back. Surprisingly dry, battery out and warmed with hair dryer. All working ok, well up to now anyhow !!
