Engine identification

Good morning all, can anyone help me with how to identify the exact engine I have in my 122S. I assumed it was standard for a 122S but having seen some rather bizarre work carried out by the previous owner of 17 years I am beginning to wonder if anything else is awry. The car has twin HS6 SUs which would appear correct but I can find nowhere to identify the engine size, (presumably 1.8) or the power output again presumably 103/5 bhp. Oh and the exhaust has twin front pipes not single which would seem to make it 1967 spec not the 66 it is.

Check to see if the number B18 or B20 is stamped on the engine block. This should be stamped on the opposite side to the carbs and exhaust and be easily visible. It appears under the VOLVO name.
B18 is 1800cc
B20 is 2000cc.

The part number is on the 'spark plug' side of the block near the top, first 4 digits are cast in, the remainder are stamped immediately following (you may need to scrape some paint/muck off the raised plinth to see them). An 1800cc part number will start with a cast '4968', also 'B18' will be cast in further along the block.

Thanks for the replies and I must apologise for the delay but I got whisked into hospital the day I posted and have only just come out yesterday. Will have a look today at the engine subject to my wife allowing me out, and reply again then. I know how annoying it can be when someone asks a question and doesn't acknowledge the replies.

The first 4 numbers are 4968 indicating an 1800 cc engine. However, there are no further numbers stamped in either of the blocks after, both are completely blank. I assume therefore, possibly wrongly, that a new short engine has been installed and not stamped up which of course doesn't help much. The engine pulls exceptionally well so I suppose it doesn't matter much what it is BHP wise as its more than adequate.

Are you sure there's no number? The font is quite small and etched into the plinth rather than raised; any paint or grease will hide it.

You were right, I scraped all the paint off and there it was, stupidly I imagined a deeply stamped number rather than a lightly etched one. Anyway it is an 02 which indicates it is the correct engine for the 122S. Sorry I didn't take your advice from the first post, it was just that the paint seemed too thin to hide a number.
