B230 onto an M41 Gearbox
Hi All,
Does anybody know about bolting a B230 up to an M41 gearbox? I know that the sump, oil pump and pick up need to be changed for B20 items. The sump fitted without incident. I will look at the pick up and oil pump very soon. The bell housing has the same bolt pattern (B20 at least) and lines up nicely. I'm just not sure about the gearbox input shaft, clutch plate etc. Has anybody done this conversion? Any advice welcome. Cheers, Darren. |

You will need a B21/23 or 8 bolt B20 flywheel and use the standard clutch. It does all line up and work out fine.

Could have phrased this better....
The clutch for an early 240 is common with both 120 and 140. You can use either use a flat flywheel, or use a dog dish with an M47 cover plate and an early 240/Amazon/140 friction plate. It makes no odds whether the M41 is late or early, the input shaft remained the same. Providing you install the B230 upright the M41 will sit level. Volvo did make a bell housing to fit an m40 or 41 to a slant mounted B21, found in 1975 240 only. Last edited by 940_Turbo; Jul 9th, 2013 at 19:26. |

Thanks for the replies gents.
I'm probably going to end up buying a special flywheel if I can't find a standard flat one. I'll look for the other bits and see what this is like in the engine bay. I think that the turbo manifold and turbo should sit in the engine bay without any modification to the inner wing, which will be great. I just need to think about the plenum side. Any more advice most welcome. Cheers, Darren. |

Please post some photos of your conversion; very interesting!
Will the M41 handle the torque of a turbo B230? (Volvo upgraded the gearbox to M400/410 for the 164). John |

Hi,,
Ok, I will put up some pictures when I drop the engine in. I don't think that the M40 / 41 will take the power for long if I don't look after it. The idea is to put the engine in and get it running with an aftermarket ECU etc. When it is running ok and I am happy with it I will then think about swapping out the gearbox. I have an M90 but this will require a new tunnel. I will also consider the T5 gearbox if I can find an adapter plate / bellhousing. I'm looking for a P1800 / 1800E / ES tunnel if anybody has one for sale. If I end up swapping the gearbox I can then look at tuning the B230 a bit more. The goal would be 250 bhp. I'm not sure the car would benefit from much more power. |
