Default Volvo 940 potential PCV issue

I did a test suggested when I reported the car is losing oil with an apparent oil leak. I put a glove over the oil filler, started the engine and the glove inflated. So pressure is trying to escape from inside the engine.

The suggestion is the PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) is blocked. Any ideas on how much that would cost to sort? I am not a mechanic but have a good friend who does mates rates, but he has little experience with Volvos.

Could it be something else again?

The car runs fine, but it has used 2 litres of oil in 2500 miles.

I replaced the entire system on my 940 in April, got all the parts from Rycroft Volvo in Warrington cost £120 for everything.

I fixed mine for about £10. This was the cost of 1m of the smaller tubing that comes off the inlet manifold to the y-piece. It is best to get the genuine Volvo tubing since it is designed to withstand high temperatures. I cleaned the rest of the system with plastic-friendly carb cleaner.

I should have thought a mechanic could do this in under an hour.

No real need for a mechanic: the job is easily DIY and very satisfying. It involves the removal of a few small pipes and 10 and 13 mm bolts, carb cleaner and/or petrol for sloshing into the plastic box, various pokey things, rags, and fresh air.

The 900 FAQS on this site - drop-down box to 'Engine maintenance covering seals, belts, crankcase ventilation' - will give you all you need to know.

I fully agree with Forrest & Ericbeaumont, you don't need a mechanic, it really is quite easy to do, must admit I did not realise just how easy it was, although I did buy all new parts, but I've saved what I took off and one day will get around to cleaning them then they would be on the shelf ready for possible future use.

Armed with a print of the FAQ I will have a look to see what I can do.

I did mine on my last 740 and relocated the "valve" - they roughly "Y" shaped bit with a thick leg and wo smaller bore hoses the other end. I moved it up from sitting on the oil separator on the block to just above the inlet manifold and with the cleaning etc and new hoses, relocation it improved matters no end.

Well worth doing it yourself and as others have said, very satisfying when you reap the rewards.

Also make sure your engine oil and filter is changed regualrly as that helps a lot too.

I am having no joy with this at all. My Haynes manual only references the PCV. Can anyone photo one on the engine so I can find it?

Trying to get a phto on the engine id siffifcult, this is what youre looking for though :

This strips down to :

which should look more like :

I modified mine to put the valve assembly (what's in the first pic) higher up - this is a Volvo originated mod, i just interpreted it my way :

Follow the thick hose down and you should find yours, haven't got a pic of where it ends because it's too dark down there but it's a rectanguler blick with the valve on top. Don't pull the block off the side of the engine, apparently it connects directly to the oil pimp and if you don't get it back on correctly can effect the oil pressure badly. Never tried it so can't confirm but if Haynes are saying it i would asume some substance to the statement.
