Default XC90 radio nightmare

Hi,

I have the same issue and very affraid about the cost of repair...

Everything was OK, and I have not noticed any issues. Just yesterday I wanted to turn the radio on, and the display remains blank. Analysing so far, the radio doesn't completely work, nor the CD (CD is inside, but it will not start to play; I cannot eject the CD anyway). But I can enter a menu to Radio or CD menu. If I turn the volume knob, it shows the "volume bar" empty (like if you set the minimum), even if turn it the way for higher volume.
I can enter a FM/AM band menu as well, but no change, no sound, nothing on display. Carphone doesn't work at all (not even a menu).
Parking sensors are not working at all, too.
:-((((((((((

Radio will turn on after a apx. 1 - 2 minutes of drive.

I found that if the knobs on ICM are lighting, the ICM has elecric power (if they don't, the fuse or ground is cut). My knobs are lighting.

I will be very thankfull for any ideas how to solve it (without buying new ICM for € 1000).

Martin

- instead of the actual station frequency it showed "88.0" irrespective of band or frequency selected
- on the FM band, "88.0" is shown for all frequencies; and instead of the RDS supplied station name I always get "á_TZ" and no radio text at all

The good news so far is:
- I can turn the stereo on and off as normal; and I do get radio reception
- the steering wheel controls still work
- the knobs and buttons on the unit all appear to work, including the setup menus, etc
- I can select presets on the radio and it will tune to the required station; and the preset number is shown at the top right of the display
- CD changer works and all the display items are as they should be when a CD is playing. So clearly the display itself is fine
- the rear park assist continues to function

I parked the car, turned off the engine and waited a minute; then restarted the car, hoping a reset might fix the problem, but no such luck. The problem persists.

The problem I'm seeing is quite minor compared to other examples reported on this thread and elsewhere. Frankly, if it stays as it is I could live with it - although it's annoying. But my questions are:

- Has anyone else seen these same symptoms
- Is this just the start of a degenerative ICM - will other problems start to occur [e.g. stereo not turning on/off, park assist fails, ...]
- Could removing and refitting the stereo fuse help reset the problem?
- does anyone know of a fix that doesn't involve my Volvo dealer relieving me of £1000 or so for a new ICM
- if the only solution is a new ICM, and given so many people are reporting this issue, will Volvo do anything to contribute towards the cost as a goodwill measure

For info, my car is a XC90 D5 SE, registered Mar 2006 [with the later engine] and has done about 65K miles.

I have exactly the same issue. Just happened with the same á_TZ coming up on the screen. Is there any resolution that does not involve me having to dip my hand in my pocket yet again
(In the last three months, replaced disks all around (350 quid), new valve pump inside gearbox (1800 quid) and the ubiquitous rear wheel bearing (250 quid).

A while ago I purchased a XC90, however, the sat nav disc player unit had been removed. I acquired a second hand unit and now the radio and reverse sensors etc. all function satisfactorily. The sat nav will work, if I reset it and set its current position, by using the wheel revolution counter and installed compass. However, it will easily lose itself. In the diagnostics I find that it is not finding any satellites because it does not seem able to talk to the antenna. I have had a Volvo specialist look at it & he tells me that the unit I have is the wrong part - I have p/n 30752406 and he says I should have p/n 8696091 - with a cost of just under £1,000. I was wondering whether the software you referred to for disabling the MOST would allow the unit that I have to talk to the antenna? Or do I need to acquire another unit? I would appreciate any light you may be able to throw on the subject.

Many thanks for any help you can provide,

Nick.

Thanks

It is the central control panel that appears to be the problem (I think it is called the ICM) and is going to cost around a grand to fix (AHHHH) if we go through the Volvo dealership in our area because they won't try and repair it but insist it has to be replaced with a new one. Does anyone know if I could try and get a reconditioned one or any other suggestions? It is such a large sum of money to pay...

can you tell me what the part number of the icm is. we keep some in stock. it is located on a rectangular white sticker on top of the plastic casing. also does the display screen have a silver band across it or not, also is it a six disc cd or single disc?
let me know

Hi Clan, you mentioned IF the radio comes on and then goes off, that this software may sort it...do you know if it would work for my symptoms here? http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=143343

Mines booked into dealers next saturday to "read codes", so i'll update more then, but do you think it could be worth asking for this download?

Thanks in advance.

I am also have a problem with my 2004 XC90, radio works, but no CD player and no 'Active Reversing' - having said that the fault is intermitent!!! so could be all up and running in the morning.
Changing an ICM does not look like a route we would want to be going down.....looks costly!!
I have had Volvo's before, I can honestly say this has been the most problematic.

Default 2004 XC90 radio issue

Ahh - even worse. I have had the same issue and was told it was the Driver Information Module (a separate $1,000 deal) only to find out that wasn't the problem. Best case scenario would be to put in a radio with bluetooth or usb port. Has anybody successfully had a new radio put in?

I'll look elsewhere on this forum but I also need a right rear position light socket.

Thanks all.

You need to get this professionaly diagnosed , its probably a problem with the Fibre optic hi fi network system caused by the ICM ( Display/control unit ) worth disconnecting the battery for 5 mins and trying again ..
