Indeed it could work but would need a bigger plug than the current 13 pin. Also would the technology be biult into every car just in case or would one have to specify a tower when buying new.

The car already has a computer it would just need the software ( set of instructions) loaded to activate , much like a towbar module today , The technology has been around in the car for around 20 years now ....

It might need just 4 pins in the caravan plug actually :

Live feed
Earth
2 network wires

A 20 year old volvo has this technology in it's instrument panel . a 1998 940 has about 40 wires going into the instrument panel .
A 1999 S80 has just 5 .
