2006 XC70 Major electrical faults
Hello Everyone.
my 2006 XC70 has decided to start having some major problems. i'm trying to research as best i can but thought a post on here was in order to see if any of you helpful folk have any advice as i'm not a mechanic. symptoms: yesterday driving along, red warning triangle came up + brake failure stop safely message, split second later both speedo and rev counter went to zero (whilst still moving) trip counter turned to dashes. the engine was still running, brakes worked and it drove ok, although if i dropped the clutch it seemed clunky. i pulled over, turned the engine off, then attempted to restart - nothing.. didnt turn over or anything. waited about 10 minutes and tried again, got message "immobiliser check manual" it would turn the engine over but wouldn't start. waited another few mins then it started and i could drive again. few seconds later the same error and loss of dials. I reached my destination. 30 mins later had to head home, car started fine but brake message came up straight away. rev counter worked but speedo didn't, drove home only few miles, no speedo and couldnt engage 5th or 6th gear so 4th max i could go (manual gearbox). today plugged into vida, had a host of codes (listed them below) i took note of them and cleared them, then took it out and was fine no errors, drove around the block couple of times couldnt replicate it at all. 5th and 6th gear engaged as normal. took note of remaining codes. this evening thought i'd try use it again, started it and straight away the red triangle but no message this time, didn't try to drive it just plugged into vida and got the codes. after researching it seems to be a communications / electrical issue somewhere. i've spotted a few threads on here with very similar symptoms but never a resolution. not even had this car a year, done very little driving (about 3k miles) and its starting to look like a money pit since i've had it it has had the anti lock service required message, because the DEM is shot, i've not bothered to fix this and just been using it in 2 wheel drive, could the DEM cause this? or could it be the BCM thats shot or the CAN fibre network broken somehow, so the codes: First reading after the first incident: BCM-0094 Communication between control units Communication problems with DEM BCM-0095 Communication between control units Communication problems with DEM BCM-0115 Communication between control units Communication problems with SAS, signal missing BCM-E000 Communication between control units Communication problems CCM-0040 Air quality sensor internal fault DEM-0006 Pump faulty signal DEM-000A Power supply faulty voltage ECM-2850 Heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) - Signal too high ECM-28E0 Heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) - Signal too high BCM-0100 Communication between control units Communication problems with ECM BCM-0148 Communication between control units Wrong configuration ID CEM-1A59 Communication with AUM control module signal missing CEM-1A5F Communication with BCM control module signal missing CEM-1A62 Communication with ECM control module signal missing CEM-DF17 CAN-H high speed network faulty signal CEM-E000 Communication with control module faulty signal ECM-1100 Ambient temperature sensor - faulty signal ECM-580F Configuration fault - Signal missing ECM-6661 Glow relay control - faulty signal ECM-6662 Glow relay control - faulty signal ECM-6663 Glow relay control - faulty signal ECM-6665 Glow relay control - faulty signal ECM-7700 Engine control module (ECM) - Incorrect check sum ECM-E000 Control module communication - signal missing SAS-E000 Control module communication faulty communication Cleared the codes, then following showed up BCM-0095 Communication between control units Communication problems with DEM CCM-0040 Air quality sensor internal fault DEM-0006 Pump faulty signal ECM-2850 Heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) - Signal too high ECM-6661 Glow relay control - faulty signal ECM-6662 Glow relay control - faulty signal ECM-6663 Glow relay control - faulty signal CEM-1A59 Communication with AUM control module signal missing took it for the drive around the block, no issues, got back turned it off and on and cleared codes again and got following on fresh read: BCM-0095 Communication between control units Communication problems with DEM CCM-0040 Air quality sensor internal fault CEM-1A59 Communication with AUM control module signal missing DEM-0006 Pump faulty signal ECM-2850 Heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) - Signal too high ECM-6661 Glow relay control - faulty signal ECM-6662 Glow relay control - faulty signal ECM-6663 Glow relay control - faulty signal ECM-940F Brake pedal sensor - faulty signal SAS-E000 Control module communication faulty communication then tonight when was going to use it but error came back this was the readout BCM-0094 Communication between control units Communication problems with DEM BCM-0095 Communication between control units Communication problems with DEM BCM-0115 Communication between control units Communication problems with SAS, signal missing BCM-0148 Communication between control units Wrong configuration ID BCM-E000 Communication between control units Communication problems CEM-1A59 Communication with AUM control module signal missing DEM-0006 Pump faulty signal ECM-2850 Heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) - Signal too high ECM-940F Brake pedal sensor - faulty signal CCM-0040 Air quality sensor internal fault CEM-1A5F Communication with BCM control module signal missing CEM-DF17 CAN-H high speed network faulty signal ECM-6661 Glow relay control - faulty signal ECM-6662 Glow relay control - faulty signal ECM-6663 Glow relay control - faulty signal SAS-E000 Control module communication faulty communication its much more complex than i realised this car, wish i'd bought an older less electronic car now bloody nightmare.

Water in the CEM and/or bad solder joins in the dashboard cluster

+1 for the CEM, someone on the forum may be fixing these. If removing it, see Youtube for a tutorial, but it's not that easy. The car battery must be disconnected while the CEM is out
Also test the charging system and battery

charging system and battery seem ok, i have a voltmeter and it looks healthy, although always possible.
i'll start by cleaning up all the earth points i can find, also will inspect the CEM it just looks like a pain to get out and once out i'll never get it back in. a lot of the errors point to the DEM which i know is faulty as the AWD is broken, and it always gave me the anti skid message. So it could be that its got worse somehow and affecting communication possibly. Or the BCM is listed a lot, could be worth checking as well. unfortunately all these items are coded to the car, expensive to repair and hellish to replace. its a clever business model, although i think it means the days of cars lasting 30-40 years are over.

Given your model year I would highly suspect water ingress into the CEM. As already posted you can remove the CEM and send it to Lukas at volvodiagnostic for repair.
I took the CEM out of my 2006 XC70 when it started to produce all sorts of electrical issues and didn't find the job to remove and replace difficult. It was repaired and returned to me in a few days and cured the issues I was having. |

A faulty DEM can cause faults like this.
What happens often is the seals leak water in to the electronics. There are other types of failures as well such as dirty filter over loading the pump and burning out the pcb. This then shorts out the CAN BUS cable, so losing communication. Try unplugging the cable from the DEM. Put it in a bag to keep the end of the cable dry |

Right folks this is my plan of action after a brief look today:
ordered a trolley jack and axle stands so i can raise the car up safely! - gain access to the top of the CEM in the engine bay (need to remove a load of stuff) and inspect it for any water ingress - if CEM looks to have water damage remove it to send off for repair - if CEM looks ok then leave in place and remove DEM - remove DEM and send off for repair as i know its faulty - source new pump and filter as codes suggest pump is faulty and looking at it looks super rusty - replace DEM, pump, filter and oil in diff. - if CEM was replaced re-fit - if none of this fixes it then it may be a duff BCM as a lot of the codes are BCM codes but will tackle that at the time sound like a good plan to you guys? also can anyone advise on a couple of things.. - is the CEM always on the drivers side, the videos i find are all LHD vehicles and i couldn’t see anything looking through the vents etc - seems the water damage is a common issue, is there anything i can buy to prevent it happening again? seems certain age vehicles had additional protection how can i tell if mine has this or not and if not can i upgrade it? - to get the haldex pump off looks like i need to remove the propshaft, is this a driveway job i don't have access to a ramp.

CEM is on the drivers side on RHD vehicles.
My water damaged CEM through up lots of codes for other modules (as most, if not all are 'routed' through the CEM) - if you've gone to the trouble of stripping it down to remove the connectors under the scuttle there isn't much more to do to remove the CEM. Lucas at volvodiagnostic can check operation of the CEM even if nothing outwardly appears wrong. If your V70 hasn't got the updated waterproofing kit for the CEM the following may be helpful. https://mafiadoc.com/volvo-car-custo...6d27a209c.html (note this shows a LHD vehicle) The updated waterproofing kit consists of: 30765127 Bellows 30728861 Seal 31300077 Flange Screw (4) I paid £34.32 at my local main dealer (Riverside Hull) for these parts (March 2018). Volvo have a service bulletin for the issue but the parts guy didn't know of it so had to speak to the master tech who, having done a few of these replacements, pointed him in the right direction to locate and then order the parts. You will need 2 cable ties to seal the bellows. |

Thanks for confirming the location of the CEM, yeah i think you're right if i'm going to go to the trouble of half removing it might as well get it checked, at least then i'll know its good.
thats great you provided the parts list really helpful appreciate it i'll take a look at the parts and see if mine has them already when i go to take the CEM out.
