I found it easier and less messy to spray the silicone into the can cap or a medicine measurer and then paint it on with a brush - that way you don't get the silicone all over the windows as it only needs to be in the channels to get the required effect.

The biggest improvement came with cleaning the lowest outer edge of the front windows which had that green algal stuff along them.
The worst build up was on the side of the car facing north - I know that sound like some sort of survival technique for determining North in the mid winter gloom without a compass but the green gunge is always worse on the North side facing seals when parked on the drive.

So sounds like I should clean the outer edge then lube with silicon.

Do you try to pull the edge out and clean it or just try to poke a wet rag or similar into the gap between the window and outer seal?

The passenger side is mostly facing north when parked at home, but I’ve only had the car for 1 year, no idea how it was parked for the other 15years!
Will just follow the green algae and clean it where I see it.

I used a mixture of water, white vinegar and few drops of washing up liquid. You could just as easily use household glass cleaner. I slid a thin plastic upholstery removal tool wrapped with thin cotton cloth wrapped around it between the glass and the seal . A couple of passes along the gap clears pretty much all of the algae and other gunge.
