I would consider getting a proper Volvo one (but they are expensive when new)
Where are you? I think I have a good used one.

A good thermostat won't cost much

Make sure you get a new seal with it.

When did you last check or change the spark plugs? (Use Volvo original unless you think you know better).
How old are the ignition leads? The original leads are made by Bougicord (and the week and year of manufacture is marked on each lead).
When did you last check distributor cap and rotor arm? You can scrape the contact points clean if you dont want to buy a new cap yet.

Steve
Hi Steve thanks for this, greatly appreciated. I live in Cheshire. How much do you want for the coil delivered? The car would benefit from a service but I think the leads are relatively new, and I have already replaced the dizzy and rotor, but I will replace plugs and take a look at the leads - I think I have the invoice from the original owner. I have ordered a new thermostat and coolant temperature sensor as well.

Car passed its MoT this week - just a little play in the front offside ball joint as an advisory so both sides will be replaced shortly. Coolant change and thermostat and temperature sensor about to be changed too!

Congratulations. Remember to use silicate coolant and not OAT based stuff.

Brill news for the test, good result.

Others things that may be worth a look at as well as previous points.
The random start-up issue.

Check the trigger wire's connection on the starter is clean and tight. If its not been cleaned to your knowledge, its worth doing anyway.

Also if you remove the battery & then the tray it sits on, you'll find a couple of earth straps going into the inner wing. Unbolt them and give the straps and the 'holes' they bolt into a good clean up.

Hope you get it sorted.

Cheers Paul, I will certainly do this. I have purchased a new (non-genuine!) cam position sensor which I will also fit this weekend. £30 so no harm!

Has anyone suggested the antenna ring on the ignition switch yet?

I had a random difficult start on my C70. Changed the antenna ring, now it's all good.

I’ve had a new cam position sensor fitted and, fingers crossed, this seems to have sorted the problem!
