Default M90 First gear annoyance...

Hi,

Is it me or does anyone else have issues with dropping down to first gear during cold mornings? I almost have to come to a full stop maybe get down to less than 6mph before it slots into gear...

I'm not using Volvo gear oil at the moment, but I'm using a GL4 spec oil (Redline MT90), I'm guessing the syncro isn't happy with this choice/grade of oil?!?

I only go into 1st when I'm pretty much stationary. It can be a bit of a b*gger to get in even then. I think its down to my bushings being knackered.

Gearbox mount, bushes and fresh oil are one of the many jobs I still have to do !

I can't think of an occasion I'd choose to downshift to first in any of my cars at any point...

Except one steep hill near me, where you can't go fast enough round a hairpin bend for second gear.

Might be the oil choice, but I don't think you should be shifting to first that often anyway!

I have to downshift to first when I'm basically doing a sharp u-turn at a cut-through on the road (residential dual carriage way) I live on to go back on myself. Gearbox mounting is about 2 years old, and the gearbox linkage bushings are around 18 months old.

I'll swap the oil over again when it's warmer, unless someone can confirm whether this is just the norm with the M90.

First question is the U-turn legal? If not and you have a prang while doing it, you could be in a lot of bother!

Second is have you tried double-declutching? Having done a bit of checking it appears you have the right or at least very similar oil to Volvo 1161423 (the other one is Redline MTL and a few others i found that are directly usable) and they are all 75W rated, GL4 lubes.

In simple terms, with an oil that thick, when it's cold it's going to slow down the synchro rings making engagement difficult. Hence the double-declutching suggestion. Takes practice to get it right but it might offer a solution.

The other would be to move or find an alternative route.

Slightly tongue-in-cheek but i think you're somewhere between a rock and a hard place on this one.

Fair play. I find on the flat it's just as easy to pull away in second in my 740...

Are you going from 2nd to 1st? That shouldn't be too bad, but still notchy when cold.

Definitely legal!

The difference between the MT90 and the Volvo fully synthetic that was 1161745 is thicker oil at 40 degrees C and 100 degrees C... I suppose that's the issue. I'll have a play about to see what oil works best for me or look at going down the process of looking at a different box altogether.

My life flashes before my eyes when I try to put it into gear, especially when the cut through just about conceals the length of the tugboat. I think my left arm has got bigger because of the 2nd to 1st gear change... or something else that involves moving my arm like reaching for the tv remote.

Yup 2nd to 1st. I think I've been spoilt by some of the other gearboxes I've used in recent years.

My car in it's current state would probably cut out if I attempted to pull away in second. Wrong fuel/ignition chips for the bits I've popped on.
