XC60 tailgate sensor inop?
The sensor under the bumper worked fine for the first couple of weeks, however it has gradually got worse with the tailgate opening after around 20 attempts.
I am assuming a new sensor will put it right (it's under warranty)? Anyone any experience of this? TIA |

Maybe you will be the exception to the rule, but, generally people who say it doesnt work are usually doing it wrong.... Are you doing a single kick in and out below the first O of the Volvo badge on the rear?

Thanks Philip,
I have tried every movement; in and out, side to side, at the V, O… And of course had no trouble in the first 2 - 3 weeks. I did drop in to a dealer when passing (so not the dealer I will use) and the guy that came out also had trouble. He clearly thought he was going to demonstrate how to do it properly and he struggled. He said they are temperamental, however it is now unusable. |

Looking like the exception then! Guess it is a new sensor, you haven't had any damage in that area have you?
btw The dealer is wrong, if you are doing the kick in and out in the place below the O then it should not be temperamental. It should work easily over 9 out of 10 times. So if you are doing that then it is clearly faulty.

Thanks again, I'll book it in. The dealership is not exactly round the corner, hence my reason for asking if it was a known issue.
I was surprised how often I used it in the first couple of weeks. |

I think it must be the car because, as you've proved to yourself, once you know where/how to kick, it's pretty much faultless. In fact, I can't remember it not working since I mastered it. I've also not heard of anyone else seeing the performance drop off. AWM |

Thanks AWM, it does work occasionally, however its failure is too often. I tried again today and it opened first time. Closed it and very same action, in same place several times and nothing.
Overall maybe twice in 20 today? It's booked in now so we will see what happens. Let's hope it's not case of telling me its performance is acceptable. For clarification, is it normal to have to hold the button to release the tailgate for a second or two? It's not an issues however my last car was immediate release without a need to hold and I'm curious if there is a link. |

On my XC90 you have to hold the button (on the key fob or the car interior button) for a couple of seconds before it opens. This is good as saves accidentally opening the tailgate onto a person/wall/post etc i guess.
As has been said mine also opens as long as I kick once under the 1st O of Volvo on the boot-lid and then stand back slightly (have you tried the standing back slightly after the kick?) |

Agree. Mine only works if I step back after the kick.
