Check yer top mounts, if the bearing and/or bushings have worn the damper rod or oarts of the mount attached to damper rod will knock, but at rest you cant always see it. Looking at the mount(s) whilst bouncing the car, you may be able to see/hear if any such thing is occurring...

Replaced the lower two piece gearbox mount already. This didn't knock but caused a drivetrain vibration felt through the steering when the torque converter opened.

I think a sub frame knock would be more pronounced, more lower frequency?

It totally sounds like knackered drop links / roll bar bushes - but as I say I`ve removed the droplinks with no effect.

I can pry and shake around the engine / subframe with no knocks.

Thing is it feels like a suspension issue as even with new arms / bushes
& struts the ride quality is still not great. Still feels `jaring` rather than smooth.
Hi
You could try and go to a good MOT garage and get them to have a look
and tell them all that you have done, they will find things that we will not see or think off,
let us know how it is and what was wrong when you get it sorted
Thanks Dave

👍 missed that bit!
Could be something attached to but not part of suspension, rattly pads/caliper, detached or loose bracket, distorted or misrouted wire/hose etc...?
I once had this on my old ZX, turned out the antirollbar was broke in the middle out of sight, it still had resistance when attaching/detaching it possibly from its other mounting points thus didnt consider it could be broken! (I see youve eliminated roll bar though)

Interesting you comment: "Still feels `jaring` rather than smooth"

Like you, I replaced the entire front suspension including springs, anti roll bar mounts, etc, etc and used Sachs dampers/springs. While the ride is a whole lot better, it's not great. I guess the 17" wheels don't help but maybe it just wasn't that great when it was new.

Been there, done that! They didn't spot the completely knackered lower balljoint. To be fair this needed car jacked with wheels hanging to identify.

I think the ride was better when I bought the car, still on 17's. It feels like there is some play `somewhere` which always results in a more abrupt / jaring ride.......

Well I fixed it......slightly embarrassing. One of the top mount nuts wasn't FT! It wasn't loose, maybe 1 more turn.

Amazed it's made that much difference but hey.....

I've just put some foam tape around the holes on the airbox mounts where the locating pegs fit, my airbox was rattling a lot, worth a try, and cheap and easy.

Spotted that as well during my shaking and prying!
