XC40 T3 review
If the fuel consumption the reviewer achieved actually reflects real world driving it's a poor show. Somehow, I don't think a 3-cylinder engine in a car that size is 'right'.
Perhaps adds to the debate about whether small engines being worked hard are good for overall mpg. http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/volvo/x...t3-2018-review _

its also a pants idea on the life of the motor itself
3 cylinders worked Hard, with a turbo to do the job of 4 or more with a turbo = engine wont last long seriously volvo what the hell were you thinking, just because the brain deads fell for the bs about "a small engine is a must for mpg", which dummy @ volvo believed this ? short lived engines, high wear , crap mpg ,, crap engine life,, in a "SUV" tosser bodyshell,, this is VOLVO ,not "kia/ford/bmw" guess the brain deads and sheeple Really have taken over the world

So why has volvo gone for "no bigger than 4 cylinder engines"
Nothing wrong with a good 3 cylinder engine IF coupled to electric motors. On their own too feeble. Imho

Maybe they see a market for this model only doing town work, almost a 2nd car for Her/Him doing kids runs, as to 60mph it is quite nippy.
I am more interested later on down the road to see how they make the hybrid, but that looks like it may be disappointing if linked to this engine, unless there is a hell of a lot more batteries power than current hybrid. Wonder what the weight difference between the 2 engine and drive trains, and size to warrant them putting 3 pot into the XC40 |

I assume that the engine will eventually be coupled to the same electic powertrain as used in the new black cab where the ICE is only really used as a range extender, no excuse for it being so feeble and unrefined now though use as the only "engine".

My only criticism of Volvo is that they don't offer this engine with an auto gearbox (and still FWD) because 150bhp and 0-62 in less than 8 seconds is more than enough. And I'd buy it with 17" wheels if I could.

people Will buy it as the ONLY car that they have, Will expect it to last, cope with motorways etc , 40k miles later when the engines shot they are not going to be happy. not that the prat who buys it new will be the one stuck with a 40k miles engine thats 100% shot, that will be the 3rd/4th owner in 4 /5 years time .... and all the sheeple will love them brand new, not give a toss about them after the 3rd year as they will have shifted it on,

There is no real reason a 3 cylinder engine shouldn't be durable.
Years ago Massey Ferguson put 3 pot engines in some of there tractors and they were brilliant engines, far better than the 4 pot engine they fitted prior to the 3 pot. Any way my great little Smart car only has a 3 pot engine, so I can't really knock them. I do agree though that this trend for small engines is not good, and I'm not sure about the durability of them, especially in a heavy car.

It is coming with a CVT gearbox with an electric motor built into it in forthcoming models .
