Default 04 v70 2.4 suspension knock that isn't suspension?

Hi all. My V70 is driving me nuts!

I had / have a front suspension knock. Sounds just like a broken drop link or loose front roll bar. 100k miles.

I have just replaced both front lower arms, lower ball joint and struts with new top mounts.

No difference to knock.

I've taken both drop links off. No difference.

So..... Any other ideas out there?

Do the subframe bushes have issue on these?

Check exhaust heat shields haven’t cove adrit, assuming there’s one in the area. Had all the back end apart on my last v70 for a drop link type noise and eventually traced it to the heat shield.

If it's predominant at low speeds, check the track rod ends too.

Lower gearbox mount possibly. Worth checking track rod ends as someone mentioned and while there also have a look (listen) at inner track rods.
PS. Since you replaced ball joints just check if everything is still nice and tight. The hub bolts on the ball joint may loosen if ball joint is not seated properly

The subframe bushes can go bad. Support a corner, remove the beefy bolt and look for wet bushing. But I'm not saying it will knock, maybe put some piece of rubber at the washer and drive some more.

While there make sure the two 14mm bolts one the rear subframe bracket are tight (try not to jack the car on this bracket as it may cause these bolts to loosen up)

True, this mount can go bad especially after playing (lowering) with the subframe for some reason.

That ice cream looked good, I need some,
I changed my right hand mount today, as I have been having some clonking some times with the car on idle, my 2002 D5 has done 81,000miles
what I found is there was some play and when you move it from side to side the rubber bar inside will hit the sub frame and there is marks/outline of the rubber bar on the sub frame were it has been knocking on it, so I hoe that was the thumping/knocking that I could here ,I hope it is not my DMF,
I have already changed the gear box torque mount, and have had to change the top mount when I got the car at 56,000 for the new shape one and had to change it last year as well as the rubber was braking up, none gen, but this right hand one maybe why? the right hand one is also none gen, I will keep my fingers crossed
Thanks Dave

Well thanks guys.

One of the outer track rod ends is new. No obvious play when I jack the wheels and do the 3 / 6 o'clock test on either side.

Replaced the lower two piece gearbox mount already. This didn't knock but caused a drivetrain vibration felt through the steering when the torque converter opened.

I think a sub frame knock would be more pronounced, more lower frequency?

It totally sounds like knackered drop links / roll bar bushes - but as I say I`ve removed the droplinks with no effect.

I can pry and shake around the engine / subframe with no knocks.

Thing is it feels like a suspension issue as even with new arms / bushes
& struts the ride quality is still not great. Still feels `jaring` rather than smooth.
