I suspect I have this too Bananarama. I.e....oils residue underneath intake and over the back where the intake is close to the rocker cover/cylinder head).

I actually had the whole air intake pipe replaced (as it had fractured slightly where the heated crankcase vent entry is). I also had the rocker cover gasket replaced as, I couldn't be sure that the oil residue was seeping from the intake or the cover. I now believe it's from the intake.

Had Volvo take a look at it - and they didn't seem concerned (other than the fractured intake).

My thoughts are turning towards something else too...a slightly clogged EGR maybe..

Car doesn't seem to be losing oil though...so that make me happy :-)

BigGreenThing - is this what yours looks like?

I don't think it could be the EGR, unless if there is a leak in the hoses connecting everything up? When we bought the car, the resonator was covered in grime (oil and dirt), cleaned it up and for now looks reasonably OK. Also, just had a look and there doesn't seem to be anything pointing to the rocker cover gasket. I'll keep investigating, but its odd that it only appears there.

Somewhat related: while doing ATF changes, I've noticed a "link" which (I think) attaches the engine/autobox to the chassis, and it is quite sooty. I think it's directly under the DPF and I wonder if there is a leak there? I shall investigate that too.

Yes - it's similar. I think the "sponge" of the engine cover has soaked up a bit over the years too. The oil residue can be seen at the end near where your clamp is. Close to the manifold. Also underneath the intake, at the front of the engine, oil residue was escaping...see attached. I'm eager to know what the plug in/sensor is on the last pic too!

Hope that helps!

It's a heater! I'm not sure why it is a heater, but that's what it is. It sits between the engine breather pipe (i think) and the air intake pipe. The reason you've got all that mess under the pipe is because the interface between the heater and air pipe is not tight enough even when clipped. You have to remove it, clean it, and smother it in oil-resistant silicone (see picture). I've done this already and it works; no more mess. Watch this >>> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kLhsfrZ6vKE

As for my oil residue, you're probably right, it's oil soaked up by the "sponge".

The heater is used to keep the vapour "vapour". From my om642 days it stopped the oil condensing, or tried to. So it stays suspended in air to be burnt. Meant for colder climates. But ours appears fine.

In response to my own question,

Jack up the car, drivers side wheel off, work like a gynaecologist through the small gap.
Thankfully Sven did the right thing and angled the jubilee clips the right way to get a socket over them. Dropped the engine tray off, plastic pipe out along with the resonator. Leak appears to be from the turbo inlet. I suspect the engines had a gulp of oil in the intake. Possibly from the PCV.
