Default Head Scratcher

Evening (for me anyway) guys. 2011 V50 1.6d edrive. Having issues with the car stalling/cutting out on me. Is happening maybe once per week and it varies between the car being hot or cold. Only ever happens on deceleration ie when I'm approaching a junction and drop below 5/10mph. It stalls and shows turn key to start. Has no issues restarting at all or starting in general. My first thought was fuel filter so changed that out with no affect. Could be an EGR issue? Car does vibrate well at idle but have just put this down to diesel. Getting 51mpg consistently. Car had 4 new Injectors about 20k ago and is only on 77k now. My other thought maybe clutch as there is a slight clunk noise when getting to the bite point. What are peoples thoughts on the list to start working through to rule things out without throwing the parts cannon at it? Tia guys

Have the fault codes read out first of all, then go from there

Hey Teddy,

I really wish there were any but that's what is making it difficult! Was wondering if anybody had ever encounter anything similar without me firing the part cannon at it!

I had random cut outs (c30), it was the egr shorting one of the voltage rails. Vapour gets into the electronics section and corrodes it. I cant remember the details but after reading wiring diagrams it was obvious to me at the time that this was causing my issue. Maybe the voltage rail was shared with the injectors, something like that. No codes indicated it was the EGR, so it wasnt immediately obvious.

Two things to check from when I suffered similar issues:

1. Get the codes read by VIDA. It's important to use VIDA as generic code readers don't help as much. If you see any faults relating to voltage/current levels then change the alternator and put a genuine Volvo one in. The voltage regulator on aftermarket or failing alternators can cause such issues.

2. Change the fuel filter, especially if it's not been changed for a while. Beware, if doing it yourself, you need to fill the new filter with diseasel before fitting as any air results in the car refusing to start.
