Default Sim cards, Volvo on Call and Hotspot, WiFi

Im a bit confused, maybe someone might be able to help.

From what I understand VOC needs a sim card (I have VOC), but as far as I am aware there is no sim inserted in the sim slot under the Sensus screen. Is there a separate sim slot for VOC? I found a manual for the XC90 online that suggested there was a sim holder under the boot liner near the rear fuse box, but I couldn't find it. Am I missing something?

I have read reference to buying a sim card for data use, I assume for using as a WiFi hotspot in the car and for Sensus to update things? Any pointers much appreciated.

Previous cars Ive had will connect to my home WiFi, but my XC90 wont. But it will see the WiFi network created if I create a hotspot from my phone... Is it possible to connect to a home WiFi network?

Thanks again

It on the right hand side under boot floor.
Not required for VOC that has its own hidden SIM.
Only for the cars own WiFi instead of tethering your phone for app data and upgrading of those apps.
Yes you can connect to the home or any WiFi as well.

Some home WiFi networks require the home modem settings changing to enable the car to pick up the WiFi, my Virginmedia requires modem settings changing, the car sees the Virginmedia WiFi but will not connect, I have not bothered altering my modem settings, basically because I an not sure how to without messing it up.

Thanks for the replies. The home network thing is weird as my previous car (Range Rover) could connect without issue. XC90 doesnt even see the network.

So if VOC has its own separate sim, if I tether my phone to my XC90 (Ive got more phone data than I could ever hope to need), then all the updates could run off of that and I have no need to put a sim in the slot in the dash. Is my understanding correct?

Yes, you can just use your phone data.

My understanding is that yes, VOC has its own 'hidden' sim within the car, however if a separate data sim is installed into the car's modem then VOC defaults to using that sim.

I have a 3 network 24GB/24 month data sim installed for RTTI, Sensus map updates OTA, Apps and other uses in the car, however I find that for using Spotify this ends up doing a lot of buffering so for Spotify I tether my phone via bluetooth and all is fine.

I am not sure what model year XC90 you have but on my V90 there is no slot under the screen for a SIM card. Don't put anything in that, it is a sensor for the Climate I do believe....

Its a 21 plate and I think you have just saved my blushes there! I took one quick look at the slot and assumed it was for a sim card. Thanks for that!

Thanks also for the advice about the data sim, I think I'll stick to tethering for the time being.

Ah I wouldn't worry, you wouldn't be the first to think it is a SIM card slot. If you have a reasonable data plan then tethering is fine.

I got the 3 SIM and out it in the car when it was on offer on Amazon.
