Default Calling all T5 owners. (mpg)

Having retired many years ago my driving pattern may not match yours but most of my mileage occurs in the spring and summer months with less activity now. My car is now seven weeks old and the first two weeks were spent putting 1000 miles on the clock. Most long individual journeys then returned about 30 mpg with an overall figure of 27 mpg. A long way from what Volvo claim but what I was led to expect. Since then journey times have reduced with lots of 5 miles or less some of these show as little as 11 mpg and many at not much more so that the overall consumption from day one is now 23 mpg. I am sure this will improve vastly once I start my European visits. Nearly all journeys are in comfort mode with speeds up to the road limits. This is not a complaint as such, just interested in what others achieve.

Have just returned from a trip to Norfolk, have filled up before my return trip home I recorded my best yet 31.46 mpg. This is worked out on a top up, not car computer. My average is now showing 29mpg.
I'm now coming up to 2k miles of mixed driving.
With my previous XC60 D5 I would have completed the similar journey on 1 tankful, bearing in mind that the tank held 10 ltrs more fuel.

I have a v50 t5 auto, not too bad on the motorway but tottering around town it is absolutely atrocious, still a good laugh though.

I think you are talking about a completely different animal, if I'm correct your's is a 2.5 as opposed to the later 2.0ltr.
Correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm on the verge of going for a XC60 T5/D5/D4 R design, the only difficult choice is the engine, I previously had a Grand Cherokee that did 28mpg but after driving the D4 found it a bit flat, found a good deal on the T5 but all I read is horror stories about fuel consumption, is it really that bad ?

Thanks

After three months and nearly 2000 miles I have the full story. Long journey.
Clear motorway at up to 70 mph I get 35 mpg
Medium traffic motorway and steady journey 30 mpg
Stop start motorway journeys never the same 20 to 25 say
Clear A Road and in a hurry 25 mpg
Short 2 mile journey to shops and back 12 mpg sometimes less.
So you see there is no one answer it depends on your journeys I have not undertaken many long journeys so far with lots of very short ones and my average to date is 25.5 mpg. I am confident that when the weather improves and we go out more it will go up to 27/30 average. I take no economy measures, just drive on comfort mode. It will never equal a Diesel engine. Disappointing but if it fits your budget it’s superior to diesel in many respects. I love it.

My average re the car computer is showing 28.5 mpg.
I might add that the computer read out on my car seems to be quite accurate.
Worst is 25.82mpg. Best is 31.46. Measured by using the topup method.

Thanks Both, I'm a petrolhead at heart as previously had A45 AMG and the Jeep was a stopgap as I blew 3 discs in my back and could not get out of the Merc !!!

I have had an extended test of the XC60 but as I said the D4 felt a bit flat even compared to the Jeep, I think I can live with 28-30 mpg based on the extra fun of the T5 engine, my only other concern is the demo was on air suspension but the one I'm looking at ordering is on springs (R Design) so hoping it's not a huge difference.

Cheers

Our XC90 averages 31 UK mpg over 5.200Km.
We drive a mix of long and short distances, mostly urban, almost no city.
I drive it in a rather sedate manner.

Why not ask for a similar sprung R design demo. They must have one tucked away somewhere. I’m betting if you liked the air suspension you will miss it. Try that before you get into a T5 as a direct comparison.
