Default V40xc courtesy car.

Just had a new V40 XC T3 for a day while my V70 was being serviced.
I was surprised that it is only fwd, the only "XC" bits seem to be a bit of plastic trim and a slight raise in height.
For over £25,000 it also seemed to be a low spec., with no sat nav or the things like heated seats, Internet, dual air conditioning, tyre pressure monitoring, cruise control, parking sensors etc. that were standard on my similarly priced V70 D2. Although the leather seats looked very good.
The fuel consumption indicated 30 mpg, while mine is usually 50 or better, altogether an underwhelming experience.

Your V70 must be a diesel to get 50mpg. Comparing apples with pears. Yes that is a low spec and the cars are expensive, but most people are not daft enough to buy one brand new. Sit inside a top of the range model with the panoramic roof included and it is a very different experience.

Our V40 XC is the SE LUX model with glass roof bought a year old and is very luxurious with superb seats, D3 so 45mpg+ plenty of power and a smooth ride. XC doesn't mean 4WD just a higher ride and more comfort for long journeys, any pool car is going to be hacked around so can't really judge it's mpg especially if its a petrol model!

You just got a dealer hack pool car.
